An unexpected tragedy recently turned my world upside down. As I reflect on the past two weeks, and all that has transpired, I’m remembering a person who lived life to the fullest, and did his absolute best to spread joy. My goal from this point forward is to try and do the same.

I was attempting to do it before, but now I’m more focused. I’ve always tried to deliver positivity through this column, and I’ve looked for the wonderful things in these towns that we call home. I think where I failed, however, was in embracing each and every moment. Those moments of peace and quiet devoid of outside interests. Those moments of contemplation without being entertained. Those moments of missed opportunities to impact others in the most positive way. Read the full story

Now, I never miss an opportunity to enjoy it. For me, it’s something I can consume without guilt. Which, is rare because I can think about food and feel the pounds hunting me down. This Sunday, July 14, marks the first of several blood drives organized locally by The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas. The great thing about this nonprofit is that it was created to serve our region. The blood donated here remains here and supplies 19 area hospitals with their needs.

As I’m writing, I can hardly believe Father’s Day is here. But rather than lament the speed at which this year is flying by, I’d rather focus on the subject at hand. Like many of you, my relationship with my dad has evolved over the years – to one now of mutual respect and an understanding that he buys breakfast. Just kidding, but he does buy breakfast. And, not just for me, for all of us. And, not just for breakfast, for any meal when we dine out together. It’s an endearing gesture that reminds me he’s “Dad,” as much as I’m sure it reminds him of the same. No matter how old we get, we’re still his kids and he’s still our Dad. However, a one-sided financial arrangement rarely works, so, when possible, my siblings and I try to come up with ways to pick up the tab. Father’s Day is the perfect time to do it.
