“When the Spirit Moves” is a lyrical collection of poems, essays, litanies and stories about family, friends, and even pets that explores how faith, trust, love and commitment can lead us to live more meaningful lives.  Written by local resident Paul Leonard, author of “Music of 1000 Hammers,” “Inside Habitat for Humanity” and “Where is Church?”  this work has a psalm-like openness to both the joys and struggles of life and reflects Paul’s global perspective developed through travel to seven continents and over 60 countries, as well as the wisdom gained from a life of servant leadership, including a stint as interim CEO of Habitat for Humanity International.

Author and Davidson resident Paul Leonard will be at Main Street Books on Sunday afternoon to discuss and sign copies of his new book, “Where is Church?” The gathering is noon to 2pm at the shop, 126 S. Main St., Davidson.

“Where Is Church?” is Mr. Leonard’s memoir of a career that has included work in both business and nonprofit ministry. Mr. Leonard is most recently known for his work with Habitat for Humanity, where he served as CEO and chairman of Habitat for Humanity International.

He has degrees from Davidson College, University of Chicago’s Divinity School, and Emory University. He first served at Trinity Presbyterian Church and then founded a non-traditional church that focused on community action and service. While there, Leonard helped organize Charlotte Fair Housing Association.

He left the traditional ministry to work in housing, and later went to work with John Crosland Co. as multi-family housing manager. There, he used federal housing programs to build low- and moderate-income housing. He became the company’s president in 1984. After Crosland was acquired by Centex Real Estate Corp., Mr. Leonard became executive vice president.

After retiring from Centex, Leonard was elected to the Board of Habitat for Humanity International, serving as chairman from 2001-2003. He became the Interim CEO of Habitat for Humanity from June 2004 through October 2005, and remains a member of the US Council for Habitat for Humanity International.
