DAVIDSON SENIOR SCHOLARS

A Primer on Economic Policy and Economic Performance for Election 2012,” with Fred H. Smith, associate professor and chair of Economics, Davidson College. Practical Landscape Design and Renovation

Memoir: Writing Your Story with Gilda Morina Syverson

We all have stories to tell! This six week course is about writing down your personal or family stories for yourself and future generations. Document your joys and struggles. Write the chapter(s) of your life that you don’t want forgotten. You will begin journaling with prompts given by your instructor. One or more of your entries will be lifted and expanded. You may bring a battery-run laptop, but a journal and fast-writing pen is required!

Instructor: Gilda Morina Syverson has been teaching memoir writing classes and workshops at Queens University for over 12 years. She has taught in the Creative Arts for over 40 years and was a 2010 Novello Literary Award Finalist for her memoir, Finding Bottom, an Italian-American Woman’s Journey to the Old Country. Her award-winning family stories and poems have appeared in literary journals, magazines and anthologies in the United States and Canada. Her poetry books Facing the Dragon and In This Dream Everything Remains Inside were published by Main Street Rag Publishing Company.

Blast Off to Space – Budding rocket scientists will explore the fundamentals of rocketry and space travel. Learn about outer space as we look at the stars and solar system. Work on projects to take home including a simple telescope, a model Saturn, and a fully functional rocket. Build and launch different types of rockets during the week and on the last day of camp, launch the solid fuel rocket you build into space and watch it return to earth by parachute before taking it home to show your friends.

Jewelry Making – Beads, beads and more beads. Necklaces, bracelet, earrings – the children will start by stringing ready made beads – learning color and pattern but by the end of the week they
will have created their own beads out of all different materials including clay and newspaper beads. They will create outrageously beautiful jewelry. This course is excellent for increasing creativity, learning relationship between colors and pattern designs but best of all they will learn the skills to continue making jewelry for many years after this week has ended and will have several beautiful pieces to take home.

Children start speaking Spanish day one. This is a great opportunity for kids to get a head start and build confidence before the beginning of the school year. These Spanish immersion camps are full of adventure, creativity, and fun.

• Basketball Camp from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with Larry Garloch for ages 7-14 at Davidson Day School. Fee is $65.00.
• Golf from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with NorthStone Golf Studio for ages 8-13 at NorthStone Country Club. Fee is $85.00.
• Preschool Hop Aboard for potty-trained 3 year olds with Tabitha Lindsay. The camp runs Monday thru Thursdays 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.. Fee is $90.00.

DAVIDSON ART CAMP

Davidson Art Camp has a few spaces left in two weeks of camps at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 301 Caldwell Lane.

Fashion Design Camp runs July 26-30, with sessions 8:30 to 11:30 for kids going into K-3, noon to 3 p.m. for 4th to 6th graders, and 5-8 p.m. for teens (grades 7-9). All students will come Friday at 3 for an evening fashion show at 6.

“I Am a Natural Disaster:  a Science and Art Experiment,” runs Aug. 2-6. Sessions are Monday-Friday 8:30-11:30am for Rising K-3rd graders; noon-3 p.m., for rising 4th-7th graders.

FOOD CAMP

Davidson-based Know Your Farms LLC is offering a series of a series of “Food, Land & People” camps this summer that aim to give kids 8-12 a better understanding of local food and where food comes from. Spaces are open in camps the weeks of July 26-30 and Aug 9-13.

The July week has been revised as a camp for 6-8 year olds, and will be running 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Know Your Farms LLC is a Davidson-based company that runs local food buying clubs in Davidson, Cabarrus County, north Mecklenburg and Charlotte. The company’s goal is to help connect consumers with meat, produce and other food from local producers.

Activities will include helping out with the community garden at Ada Jenkins Center, “Iron Chef” style cooking competitions with boxes of food delivered from local farms, visits to local food businesses such as Davidson Chocolate Co., where kids will learn about where chocolate comes from. Campers also will participate in other activities including behind-the-scenes visits to restaurants, craft projects with recycled objects and scavenger hunts, games and geocaching.

“It’s mostly about having fun with food – the production, the preparation and the preservation of food,” said Christy Shi, co-founder of the company.
