"Men in Black 3" opens this week. Our Town Cinemas has a midnight show Thursday.
Public meetings in Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville are on the calendar this week, along with playoff games for the W.A. Hough High School soccer and baseball teams. Community School of Davidson hosts its 5th annual student-designed “Holocaust Memorial Museum.” It’s Living History Weekend Saturday and Sunday at Historic Latta Plantation in Huntersville and there’s plenty of local music on the schedule, too. The eagerly-awaited film “The Hunger Games” opened with a series of sold-out midnight shows Thursday night at Our Town Cinemas. Then dozens of fans came to the moviehouse in Sadler Square Friday night for an autograph session with the film’s local stars – actors who landed roles as extras in the film.
“The fans and our movie stars were excited. It was quite a success,” said Our Town Cinemas’ Jan Black.

Lectures by a local author working to change perceptions of beauty, the editor of one of the world’s most influential newspapers, and an expert on Islam as both a religion and a culture highlight the weekend’s activities in and around Davidson. The Davidson Farmer’s Market hosts its final winter tailgate market Saturday before the start of the regular season. And “Stones in His Pockets” wraps up its run at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.
Meanwhile, “The Hunger Games” opens at area theaters, including Our Town Cinemas, where Thursday midnight shows are already sold out. On Friday, they’ll host an autograph session at 6 p.m. with area residents who snagged jobs as extras on the locally-filmed movie. Read the full story

Miracle on 34th Street opens this week at Our Town Cinemas.
Our Town Cinemas in Davidson will be screening the holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street” this holiday season, beginning with a Lake Norman Chamber Kickoff and Fundraiser for the Ada Jenkins Center this Thursday, Dec. 8. A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a screening at 7 p.m. at the cinema, in the Sadler Square Shopping Center off Griffith Street.
Ada Jenkins Center representatives will be at the theater Thursday to greet guests and collect donation checks. The regional community services center, at 212 Gamble St. on Davidson’s West Side, provides a variety of services – from free health and dental clinics to after school and counseling programs. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," the last film in the series, opens with a midnight show Thursday at Our Town Cinemas in Davidson and other theaters.
Our week begins with meetings – Lake Norman Marine Commission Monday, and both the Mecklenburg County Commission and Davidson Town Board Tuesday. On Wednesday, don’t be alarmed when you hear the McGuire Nuclear Station sirens being tested at 11:50 a.m. On Thursday, there’s a blood drive at Ben & Jerry’s, where donors receive a coupon for a free pint of ice cream. Bonita Knott, “the barefoot poet,” performs Friday and Saturday at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. On Saturday, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Mooresville hosts a Community Fest with yard sale, farmer’s market and community business expo.
