Miracle on 34th Street opens this week at Our Town Cinemas.

Our Town Cinemas in Davidson will be screening the holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street” this holiday season, beginning with a Lake Norman Chamber Kickoff and Fundraiser for the Ada Jenkins Center this Thursday, Dec. 8. A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a screening at 7 p.m. at the cinema, in the Sadler Square Shopping Center off Griffith Street.

Ada Jenkins Center representatives will be at the theater Thursday to greet guests and collect donation checks. The regional community services center, at 212 Gamble St. on Davidson’s West Side, provides a variety of services – from free health and dental clinics to after school and counseling programs. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," the last film in the series, opens with a midnight show Thursday at Our Town Cinemas in Davidson and other theaters.

Our week begins with meetings – Lake Norman Marine Commission Monday, and both the Mecklenburg County Commission and Davidson Town Board Tuesday. On Wednesday, don’t be alarmed when you hear the McGuire Nuclear Station sirens being tested at 11:50 a.m. On Thursday, there’s a blood drive at Ben & Jerry’s, where donors receive a coupon for a free pint of ice cream. Bonita Knott, “the barefoot poet,” performs Friday and Saturday at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. On Saturday, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Mooresville hosts a Community Fest with yard sale, farmer’s market and community business expo. This weekend is full of theater, live music and fun to ring in the summer. To celebrate the end of the school year, Davidson IB Middle School alumni, friends and family are invited to join students and staff in a walk to the Green on Thursday. Touch a Truck is on Saturday where children can learn about specialty vehicles and heavy machinery at the McGuire Nuclear Station. The Davidson Farmer’s Market, Symphony in the Park, and the Birdsnest’s No Power Concert are also on Saturday. Finally, the Warehouse Performing Arts Center is finishing up its play festival on Sunday with a performance of “Grave Comedies.”

Charlotte's Blue Chip Jazz Band plays a Concert on the Green Sunday at 6 p.m. in downtown Davidson.

It’s reunion weekend at Davidson College, and the area is host to a pair of Saturday fund-raisers – the Loopy for a Cause 24-hour run for Batten’s Disease research, on the Davidson Village Green, and the Collier Lilly Ride 4 Life at Davidson College, to raise money and awareness for organ donation.  A new play festival opens this weekend at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius, featuring a collection of short plays called “Grave Comedies.” Rural Hill will be celebrating and re-enacting the wedding of the historic site’s founders on Saturday, and there’s a jazz Concert on the Green on Sunday.

Lake Norman Big Band plays Monday at Amos' at the Lake.

There’s a good choice of events to keep you entertained this week. The Lake Norman Big Band is playing at Amos’ at the Lake on Monday and Pat Godwin from the “Howard Stern Show” is visiting the Comedy Zone on Tuesday. Wednesday is National Senior Fitness Day at Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics and the documentary “Play Again,” which follows several children from their “high tech” world into nature for a week, will be playing at the Mt. Island Charter School, also on Wednesday. Green Drinks Lake Norman meets on Thursday with guest speakers from the Davidson Farmer’s Market. Cornelius is holding a Memorial Day celebration on Saturday and will feature a speaker, patriotic music and the groundbreaking of the Cornelius Veterans Monument.
