Opens Saturday at Armour Street Theater.

Davidson College’s production of “Into the Woods” has its final performances this weekend, so catch it while you can. Davidson Community Players Connie Co. opens “Stuart Little” on Saturday.  Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools are closed on Friday for a teacher workday. Cornelius Arts Center hosts a Camp Crawl Saturday previewing its summer art camps, and they’ll be giving away  prizes. Gethsemane Baptist Church is celebrating its 106th Birthday, celebrating it during the Sunday 10 a.m. worship service and musician Joshua Panda will be playing at the Birdsnest on Sunday. Also, Davidson United Methodist Church hosts an egg hunt Sunday afternoon at Lake Norman YMCA waterfront.

this week buttonThis week is full of theatrical productions and films. “Stuart Little” starts this weekend at Armour Street Theater, joining Davidson College’s “Into the Woods” on the local playbill. There’s also a play titled “Vesta” from Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region that explores the emotions and decisions a family must face through the end of a grandmother’s life. The movies “Race to Nowhere” and “Play Again,” about children and how today’s culture affects them, are both being screened on Tuesday. The week’s highlight may be Wednesday’s concert at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church by Choir of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford. And there’s a banjo music concert at Davidson College on Sunday. There’s also an early Easter egg hunt on Sunday at the Lake Norman YMCA.

this week buttonStarting off the week, the Democrats of Precinct 206 are meeting again Monday night to get a quorum of members to elect officers. Also Monday, the Future of the Library Task Force presents its recommendations to the county commission and library board. On Tuesday, Poet and novelist Joseph Bathanti, professor of English at Appalachian State University, will be reading from his work. Cynthia Lawing and Ruskin Cooper will perform Wednesday at this week’s Davidson Music Department Faculty Recital. There’s another concert on Thursday, this time at Summit Coffee where Shantell Ogden from Nashville, Charlotte songwriter Steve Simpson and host Rob McHale will be performing. The Davidson College theater and music departments will join forces to present “Into the Woods,” starting Friday and ending April 2.

weekend calendar bugAn exhibit titled “Excavations,” including 19 paintings spanning the 50-year career of Davidson College art professor Herb Jackson, opens with a reception Thursday night at Davidson’s Belk Visual Arts Center. Elsewhere, Community School of Davidson produces its first high-school play, “Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon,” on Friday and Saturday, while the art-forgery drama “Masterpiece” continues at Davidson Community Players’ Armour Street Theater. Davidson College’s Gamut dance group hosts another show Friday and Saturday nights. There’s a Davidson Greenways, Trails and Bikeways meeting on Thursday and a Concert on the Green planning meeting on Friday.

davidson weekend calendar“Masterpiece,” a new play about a famous art forgery, debuts this weekend at Davidson Community Players, running Thursday-Sunday. Thursday night, there’s a Davidson College men’s basketball game against Elon. Friday night’s music includes Davidson Local at Summit Coffee,  and the Lake Norman Big Band Friday night at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Davidson’s baseball team faces Ohio Friday. On Saturday, the Davidson Farmer’s Market is open, there are two baseball games and a basketball game and a concert to benefit McKinney Academy. Davidson College Presbyterian Church hosts a chili cook-off, while soup is at the heart of a fund-raiser in Mooresville for Serenity House.

‘Kokoro,’ Wildcat basketball, concerts, lectures

A busy week in and around the area starts off with a blood drive at DCPC,  a reading by novelist Cris Mazza at Davidson College, and this week buttonperformances by songwriter Dan Bern at Birdsnest on Monday.  There’s also a lecture on the “Sexual Politics of Meat” by feminist author Carol J. Adams. There will be a Q&A with Ms. Adams on Tuesday and a vegan cooking workshop on Wednesday.

Davidson College’s production of the play “Kokoro” runs Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m and Sunday at 2 p.m. And there are two home basketball games this week: the Davidson Wildcat men play Georgia Southern on Wednesday and the Wildcat women play Georgia Southern on Saturday.

There are a number of concerts  to attend at Davidson College including a performance by a string band, a Davidson College Symphony performance and another by the Rhodora Winds Quintet. Also, there are two fund-raisers: Dinner at Davidson for the Davidson Trust scholarship program and the Green Ball to benefit the Davidson Lands Conservancy.
