Series returns to Sunday-only schedule to aid merchants

The Davidson College Symphony and Davidson College Jazz Ensemble play the first Concert on the Green of the 2011 season this Sunday, May 1, from 6-8 p.m. on the Davidson Village Green. Their performance wraps up this weekend’s Davidson Art on the Green, a two-day festival of arts and crafts on the Green.

The concerts are back for another season, returning to a Sunday schedule this year – the first and third Sundays of the month – in front of Davidson public library at Main Street and Concord Road.

Rural Hill presents the North Carolina Brewers and Music Festival May 14 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with hand-crafted ales and lagers and musical performances from local and national bands, including: Chatham County Line, Eric Lindell, The New Familiars, The Mantras, Sol Driven Train, Do It To Julia and The Moonshine Racers. The Birdsnest on Main Street in Davidson will go completely off the grid on Friday, April 22, in an all-in observance of Earth Day. The record store, music school and studio on Main Street will turn off the electricity on Friday – lights, air conditioning, computers and even the electric piano. Then Friday night, musicians Billy Jones and Mason Bissett and other guests will play a concert without electric lights or amps. Read the full story

HUNTERSVILLE – Men in kilts, marching pipe bands, amateur and professional athletic competitions, country dancing and a historic encampment are on the schedule this weekend at the 18th Annual Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games. The fun begins Friday and continues through Sunday at Rural Hill off Neck Road.

It’s going to be a busy weekend, full of fun events. Davidson Day School is welcoming top Maya archeologists and scholars today (Thursday) for the Maya at the Lago Conference that continues over the weekend. The Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Games comes back to Rural Hill for it’s 18th year and Festival in the Park presents the first annual Kings Drive Art Walk. There are three events focused on the environment this weekend: Charlotte Clean and Green Festival at CPCC, Viva Verde Earth Fest in Kannapolis and Wild Over Lake Norman at Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station. The U.S. National Whitewater Center is hosting musical guests, and there’s a rodeo at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte. On Saturday, Cornelius PARC hosts an egg hunt and Hop into Spring fest at Bailey Road Park.

This week, Davidson College students present majors they designed themselves, the Cornelius Board of Commissioners is meeting and there’s the Spring Fling Car Auction. Activist Eli Clare comes to Davidson College to read from his work and speak about social justice issues, such as disability, race and gender. The film “Waiting for Superman,” an exploration of public education in the U.S., will be playing at Community School of Davidson on Monday and Tuesday. On stage, William Inge’s play “Bus Stop” will be performed at Davidson College on Wednesday, while “Stuart Little” continues its run at Armour Street Theater this weekend. On Thursday, supporters of a Cornelius Veterans’ monument will hold a fund-raising Gala of Honor. And Davidson hosts its annual April Is for Arts Gallery Crawl on Friday.
