"Two Birds" by John Borden Evans is among an exhibit of his paintings opening this week at Christa Faut Gallery.

After a flurry of events in and around Davidson over the past few weeks, our calendar is becoming lighter. Summer on the way? There’s still plenty to do this week, from lectures and theater to movies and meetings. “Iron Man 2″ opens in theaters later this week and Our Town Cinemas in Sadler Square is hosting a special midnight screening on Thursday. A production of Athol Fugard’s “Road to Mecca” continues at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. And Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius will have an opening reception Saturday of a new exhibit of paintings by John Borden Evans. On Sunday, St. Alban’s Church kicks off a new “Spirituality in the Arts” performance series with a concert by the Bechtler Ensemble, a piano-cello duo.

May brings a busy month of symphony concerts, chamber music performances and the first event in a new series at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church called Spirituality in the Arts.

The month kicks off Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. with year’s final Music at St. Alban’s concert, “Every Time I Feel the Spirit: 250 Years of Music by Black Composers,” featuring countertenor Reginald Mobley and pianist Henry Lebedinsky.

Also Sunday, the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra plays the last of its Concerts for a Cause, this time benefiting Our Towns Habitat for Humanity. The 7:30 p.m. concert is in Duke Family Performance Hall. Donations accepted at the door.

Here’s a treat for local jazz fans: Davidson College’s annual guest jazz artist residency is this Thursday through Saturday, this year featuring 2002 Davidson graduate and saxophonist Aaron Lohmeyer. The residency wraps up with a free concert along with the Davidson College Jazz Ensemble Saturday night in Duke Family Performance Hall.

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius has announced the musical lineup for its spring and summer Cornelius Concert Series. Mick & The Ultras (rock and blues) will pay May 16, Testify (musical drama) is scheduled June 12, and the St. James Male Chorus performs July 11.
