Duke to test upgraded sirens at McGuire on Nov. 7

HUNTERSVILLE – Emergency sirens located around McGuire Nuclear Station will be sounding on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to test an upgrade to the siren system. Duke Energy says these tests are in addition to the regular quarterly siren tests.

All of the sirens within a 10-mile radius of McGuire Nuclear Station, located in the counties of Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln, Iredell and Catawba counties, will sound for approximately one minute, and the test may occur more than once. No public action is necessary. This test is being conducted in cooperation with the State of North Carolina and county emergency management agencies.

Because this is a test, local broadcasting stations will not interrupt regular programming to broadcast an Emergency Alert System (EAS) message. If this were a real emergency, local radio and television stations would broadcast information and instructions to the public. In the event of severe weather, the siren test will be postponed until a later date and residents will receive notification of the new date.

McGuire hosts free Charlotte Symphony concert and eagle release Fri.

McGuire Nuclear Station on Friday invites the public to its annual free Charlotte Symphony concert on the lawn of the EnergyExplorium, off Hwy. 73 in Huntersville.

Concert-goers may pack a picnic and bring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the show, and, boaters may anchor in the EnergyExplorium’s cove at the southern tip of Lake Norman.

East Lincoln High School‘s Band Booster Club will be selling snacks and drinks at the event.

The concert begins at 8:15 p.m. Before the concert, the Carolina Raptor Center will release into the wild a juvenile bald eagle.

McGuire plant hosts Charlotte Symphony June 17

HUNTERSVILLE – The Charlotte Symphony will play a free outdoor concert on Friday, June 17, at 8:15 p.m. at McGuire Nuclear Station’s EnergyExplorium, off N.C. 73. Conducted by Albert George Schram, the symphony will perform a “Musical Travels” program.

Bring a blanket, pack a picnic and come early to get a good spot on the lawn. Boaters may anchor in the EnergyExplorium’s cove at the southern tip of Lake Norman. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase through the East Lincoln High School’s Band Booster Club.

“Our symphony concert has become a signature event for the Lake Norman area and is our biggest community event of the year,” Valerie Patterson, communications manager for McGuire, said in a press release. “Last year, we had our largest crowd ever with more than 9,000 attendees and 150 boats anchored in the cove. This concert really has become a favorite where families, friends and Lake Norman neighbors come together to enjoy the lake and hear great music.”
