Fund-raisers next week to aid Habitat for Humanity, YMCA

Employees at Ingersoll Rand in Davidson competed in a triathlon last month, and ended up raising $60,000 for the Ada Jenkins Center on Gamble Street. Meanwhile, looking ahead at fund-raising events next week: Women of NASCAR are hosting a fund-raising dinner Tuesday, Sept. 7, as they team up to raise money to build a Habitat for Humanity house. And Lake Norman YMCA is seeking donations of items for its annual Community Garage Sale, which is Saturday, Sept. 11. Those events and more in our fund-raising calendar below.

Four visually impaired golfers will be on the links again this year when area Lions Clubs host the sixth annual Russell B. Knox Memorial Golf Tournament next Monday, April 26 at River Run Country Club to support Lions’ programs. Meanwhile, our fund-raisers’ calendar also includes this Saturday’s “Fire” 5k run and barbecue festival at Ada Jenkins Center, the Habitat for Humanity Car Show in Cornelius Saturday and the annual Dick Sanderson Driving 4Life Golf Tournament and dinner to support the Sanderson family and research on ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

It’s a busy week ahead in Davidson with several Town Board meetings, lectures and other events at Davidson College, and some big weekend fund-raisers, including the “Fire” 5k/Fun Run and Barbecue Festival at Ada Jenkins Center and a Habitat for Humanity Car Show. The Davidson Senior Scholars have a session on Social Security and Medicare changes Wednesday.

April is for Arts in north Mecklenburg kicks off with a Gallery Crawl in Davidson and Cornelius on Friday evening. You’ll have several choices for theater this weekend: “Reluctant Lovers” at Warehouse PAC in Cornelius, “Charlotte’s Web” at Armour Street Theatre, and a student theater production at Davidson College. And the Davidson Farmers Market has the last of its winter tailgate markets Saturday morning next to Town Hall.

Ada Jenkins Center's "Fire" 5k and barbecue festival is April 17.

Mooresville’s HealthReach free medical clinic has seen a 50 percent jump in visits by its uninsured patients since 2008 and needs help meeting operating expenses, as well as new roof. To raise a bit of cash, the clinic will host a “Raise the Roof Soiree” Saturday, March 20, at a lakefront home.

Also below: Free cone day is coming up March 23 at Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop and they’ll let you be a guest scooper if you bring in supplies for Ada Jenkins Center’s Loaves & Fishes pantry. Meanwhile, Ada Jenkins Center’s Fire fund-raiser and 5k road race will be April 17. And it’s that time of year for fund-raising golf tournaments. Davidson Day and the Lions Club have April tourneys in the works.

This month, events to raise money for local charities and worthy causes abound. Need your lawn raked? Students from Davidson College’s Habitat for Humanity will take care of it, in exchange for a donation to their next home build. For the athletically minded, there’s a Sunday golf tournament, and a pair of runs: one through Lake Norman State Park and a low key 5k through scenic Davidson neighborhoods. In the arts, Davidson College a capella groups perform to benefit special needs children. The famed Beggar Boys return to St. Alban’s complete with Irish dancing and holiday tunes to benefit listeners and the Mooresville Soup Kitchen alike. And even holiday shopping can be altruistic when it’s done at the Mt. Zion Crafts and Gifts Show in Cornelius. Read the full story

It’s nearly the weekend and our calendar here in Davidson has sports, theater, music and more. Davidson Community Players’ production of Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park” opens tonight at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. The 2009 Moravian Music Festival concludes Friday with a concert at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. North Meck Soccer Club holds a free soccer skills night Friday.

A quartet of local poets will read from their work on Sunday at St. Alban’s. Also Sunday, Habitat for Humanity will host its second annual Car Show at the ReStore parking lot on North Main Street in Cornelius. Come see vintage cars, hot rods and more and help a good cause. And don’t forget Saturday’s Davidson Farmers’ Market downtown, where it’s Tomato Day. And on the radio: WDAV-FM broadcasts live from Brevard Music Festival in the N.C. mountains.
