Global Zero of Davidson College and Davidson Outdoors will join together this Saturday, March 23 for Bike Around the Bomb, a 50-kilometer bike ride that traces the blast area of a nuclear explosion. The ride begins at 10am at the Davidson Town Green.

Global Zero is an international non-partisan group founded in 2008 working to achieve the elimination of nuclear weapons. Davidson College’s chapter is one of more than 100 similar student groups across the nation working to raise awareness of nuclear disarmament at the grassroots level.

According to Alyssa Strykers, the Davidson senior who leads the college’s Global Zero chapter, the 50 kilometer bike ride represents the area that would be affected by a nuclear blast. By following the event’s route, cyclists will get a better idea of the actual effect a nuclear explosion could have on their community.

The ride is free for Davidson College students but costs $15 for others. The registration fee includes a free event t-shirt. Organizers said they hope to see students, faculty and staff there, as well as community members.
