Rough Draft plays a Concert on the Green Sunday.
While Independence Day isn’t until Monday, there are plenty of events this weekend to help you celebrate. Starting Saturday there is a July 4 festival at the U.S. National Whitewater Center with live music and fireworks each night, ending Monday. Sunday, Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville hosts a celebration with live music, games, vendors and fireworks. Also Sunday, there’s a small Independence Day parade in Davidson, followed by a Concert on the Green featuring Rough Draft. Other events this weekend include an all day library celebration at the Davidson public library on Friday to celebrate its survival for another fiscal year. And on Saturday, there’s the Soul Food Festival at Rural Hill that will feature old school R&B and great soul food. Meanwhile, CorneliusNews.net is the lead sponsor for the Town of Cornelius holiday celebration Monday.

This week starts off with a couple of book clubs: Guytime at Davidson public library on Monday and the Daylily book club at Cornelius public library on Tuesday. There’s a business seminar at the Lake Norman Chamber about how to grow your business on the internet on Monday. On Wednesday, “Little Fockers” will be screened at Torrence Chapel Park as part of the Summer Outdoor Cinema Series. The Soul Food Festival comes to Rural Hill on Saturday and the July 3rd Summer Celebration will be at the Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville on Sunday.

Davidson College’s Asian Culture & Awareness Association host its annual Lunar New Year Celebration to welcome the
Year of the Rabbit on Sunday, Feb. 6, 5-7:30 p.m., at Davidson College Alvarez College Union atrium.
The annual event includes performances and food. At 8 p.m., the crowd moves to the Chambers Hall front lawn for fireworks. Free and open to the public. Read the full story

This Fourth of July weekend is full of celebrations. Saturday features community gatherings in Davidson and Mooresville, while Sunday’s events will be in Birkdale, Charlotte, Cornelius. The Davidson celebration on the Village Green Saturday includes a parade and a Concert on the Green. They’ll have the Lake Norman Orchestra and fireworks Saturday at Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville and Sunday in Charlotte. Cornelius’s event Sunday includes music and ends with an outdoor screening of the film “Avatar.” And don’t forget the Davidson Farmers’ Market downtown on Saturday.

"Twilight Saga: Eclipse" opens with a midnight showing Tuesday at Our Town Cinemas.
July 4 celebrations are on tap at the end of the week, with events on Saturday in downtown Davidson and at Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville and Sunday in Cornelius,
Charlotte and other locales. The Lowe’s YMCA and Charlotte events include fireworks. Cornelius’s celebration wraps up with an outdoor screening of the movie “Avatar.” Also this week, public meetings include a school forum and a Davidson Planning Board meeting on Monday, and a MI-Connection board meeting on Wednesday.
“Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” the third installment of the popular vampire series, opens with a special midnight showing on Tuesday night at Our Town Cinemas, in Sadler Square. (See movie listings at right.)

After a wintry weekend, the week ahead in Davidson has no shortage of things to do. Basketball games, a slew of concerts and recitals, meetings and lectures, as well as Davidson College’s annual Lunar New Year festival and fireworks, fill our calendar for this week. And the college theater department brings “Nine Parts of Desire” to the stage.
And Saturday is the rescheduled Davidson Cares worship service and community service project to help earthquake victims in Haiti.
