Mr. Gibbs’ drawings use iconic images of American cities and culture. They’re painstakingly created using a grid of tiny marks on paper, almost like “a human computer printer,” he says.

Mr. Gibbs talks about the exhibit, the “eureka moment” that inspired his unusual technique, and the importance of the images vs. his technique.

The Exhibit “Ewan Gibbs: America” is on display through Oct. 6 in Davidson College’s Belk Visual Arts Center, Main and Griffith streets. Also on display is the annual fall show of faculty artworks. The galleries are open weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm and weekends from noon to 4 pm. More information is available on the college website.
