This Week in the Lake Norman region, town government meetings, an art opening, healthy lifestyle meetings, and numerous other events are on the calendar.

Among the highlights: Author Wiley Cash, whose book “A Land More Kind Than Home” is this year’s ReadDavdson book, will visit for a dinner and talk.  Today (Monday) The Angels of ’97 will host the 10th Annual Puttin’ Fore a Purpose Golf Tournament at Pine Island, starting at 12:30pm. The Cornelius Town Board meets tonight at Cornelius Town Hall at 6pm, with a public hearing planned on proposed changes to the town’s Land Use Plan. COMING UP THIS WEEK

Monday evening, the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center will host the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good … Feel Better” program from 6:15pm – 8:15pm in the hospital private dining room. Volunteer cosmetologists will assist female cancer patients in learning how to use make-up and skincare techniques to overcome appearance related effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

Lake Norman Big Band plays at a Davidson Concert on the Green

On Tuesday, big band returns to the region once again with The Lake Norman Big Band’s monthly concert at George Pappas’ Victory Lanes in Mooresville from 7-9pm. The event is free, though donations are requested. Tuesday evening, the Davidson Board of Commissioners will meet for a work session at 6pm in Davidson Town Hall. At 7:30pm, the Twister’s Shag Club continues their last dance class series of the year at Fat Boys Restaurant in Mooresville. Learn how to dance in either Beginner 1 or 2 lessons.

Wednesday, the Cornelius Land Development Code Advisory Board will meet at noon in Room 204 of Cornelius Town Hall, and Hough Men’s Soccer takes on Vance at home starting at 6pm. At 6:30pm, the mayors of Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville will host a public forum at Cornelius Town Hall in the Community Room along with representatives of CMS for a presentation on the proposed school bonds. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

Artists participating in the group exhibition “Parodic Machines” at the Davidson College Visual Arts Center will participate in an artists’ panel discussion at 6pm in the center. The artists will speak about their work, which relies on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The exhibit opens this Thursday at 6:30pm.

Wiley Cash’s “A Land More Kind Than Home” is this year’s ReadDavidson selection.

Thursday, the group exhibition titled “Parodic Machines” opens at Davidson College on Thursday with a reception in the Davidson College Belk Visual Arts Center at 6:30pm. The exhibition feature five artists working in the fields of robotics. Green Drinks Lake Norman welcomes Cornelius Town Commissioner Bruce Trimbur at 5:30pm at Campania Café.

Meanwhile, Author Wiley Cash, author of this year’s townwide read “A Land More Kind Than Home,” will participate in the final ReadDavidson program of the year at 7pm at The Pines.

Holocaust survivor Susan Cernyak-Spatz

Several community organization meetings and lectures are on the calendar this week, as well as a local high school soccer matchup. This week also brings the annual Bethel Church BBQ, Bake Sale and Silent Auction, on Thursday in Cornelius.  And the Amazing Maize Maze, a cornfield adventure, is open again this weekend at Rural Hill in Huntersville.  Tonight (Monday), Holocaust survivor Susan Cernyak-Spatz will give a talk titled “Perpetrators Through the Eyes of the Victims” at Davidson College. COMING UP THIS WEEK

Tuesday, Professor David Pfenning from the Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill will discuss “The Flexible Organism” at 11:05 a.m. in room 146 of the Dana Science Building at Davidson College. The Twister’s Shag Club continues its beginners and beginners II dance lessons this week, with the first class starting at 7:30pm at Fat Boys Restaurant in Mooresville.

Tuesday evening the Davidson Faculty Recital will begin at 7:30pm in Tyler-Tallman Hall in the Sloan Music Building at Davidson College and will feature numerous performances by the Davidson faculty. Saxophonist Patrick Brown, soprano Jacquelyn Culpeppper, violinist Rosemary Furniss, baritone Christopher Gilliam, French horn player Frank Portone, pianist Michael Rowland, composer Jennifer Stasack, mezzo-soprano Diane Thornton and harpist Christine Van Arsdale will perform.

A read Davidson Reptile program is Wednesday.

This Wednesday, grab a meal at Carrburritos of Davidson and support Davidson College’s Warner Hall’s all-day fundraiser for the Regional AIDS Interfaith Network (RAIN) and the Mwandi Christian Mission Hospital for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. 10% of all sales on Wednesday will be donated to these charitable organization. Local high school soccer teams clash as Hough Men’s Soccer takes on North Meck at noon at W.A. Hough High School. ReadDavidson’s Reptile Day starts at 7pm at the Davidson Town Library, featuring Davidson College Professor Michael Dorcas who will speak about reptiles in a kid-friendly program. This event is part of the annual ReadDavidson townwide reading program.

Looking ahead to Thursday, the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club will meet at 7:30am at the Acropolis restaurant in Cornelius, and the annual Bethel Church BBQ, Bake Sale, & Silent Auction takes place throughout the day with all proceeds again this year benefiting Barium Springs Home for Children. Diners are invited to drive through, eat in, or carry out barbecue dishes.
