Hold your breath: It’s a busy week ahead in and around Davidson. What to pick? The North Meck Rotary and Angels of ’97 have annual charity golf tournaments at either end of the work week. Tuesday is chock full of meetings and lectures: Davidson Rotary, the Davidson Town Board, and the North Meck Republican Women all are meeting. At the college are lectures on immigration reform and by visiting artist Ewan Gibbs. Also Tuesday, Organ at Davidson opens its 2010-11 series with a concert by Robert Parris. Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities holds a public meeting Wednesday on possible reform of the water rate structure. The weekend brings a variety of opportunities, including the Know Your Farms’ 2nd annual tour of area farms and the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green road races and Green Day Festival. On Sunday, the world-class Music @ St. Alban’s series kicks off with the fifth annual “BachFest,” while Mt. Zion United Methodist Church starts its 2010-11 concert series with a performance by the Vianello Trio. Also Sunday, it’s the final 2010 Concert on the Green, with the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble.

Alabama Blues Brothers

Davidson’s free Concerts on the Green return today with another Friday night installment, featuring the Alabama Blues Brothers, a Blues Brothers’ tribute/show band.

The Alabama Blues Brothers (who claim to be the only Blues Brothers impersonators who are actually brothers) deliver an authentic show impersonating the legendary “Saturday Night Live” characters, Jake and Elwood. They play complete with black suits, Ray-Ban sunglasses and an eight-piece band, all in prison stripes. Read the full story

"Twilight Saga: Eclipse" opens with a midnight showing Tuesday at Our Town Cinemas.

July 4 celebrations are on tap at the end of the week, with events on Saturday in downtown Davidson and at Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville and Sunday in Cornelius, Charlotte and other locales. The Lowe’s YMCA and Charlotte events include fireworks. Cornelius’s celebration wraps up with an outdoor screening of the movie “Avatar.” Also this week, public meetings include a school forum and a Davidson Planning Board meeting on Monday, and a MI-Connection board meeting on Wednesday.

“Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” the third installment of the popular vampire series, opens with a special midnight showing on Tuesday night at Our Town Cinemas, in Sadler Square. (See movie listings at right.)

For the past two years, Frank Albert has been working out of his Mooresville home to help local string musicians with repairs, supplies and finding new instruments. On Tuesday, June 15, he moved his business – called All Strings Attached – into a small storefront in the former Davidson Icehouse, at South Main Square shopping center.

Nashville and other parts of Tennessee were decimated by flooding in early May. On Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m., a collection of Davidson-area musicians will play a benefit concert on the Village Green for the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, which is working to help residents rebuild their lives.

The lineup includes a lot of local musical favorites: Rusty Knox Band, Angelo Melendez, Davidson Express, Mike Strauss Band, and Billy Jones and The Pocket. Read the full story

Davidson’s Concerts on the Green series continues Sunday, May 23, at 6 p.m. with a performance by Band of Oz. Organizers also have announced the lineup for the season of concerts, which continues into September.
