Bake a pie for the Davidson Family Reunion

DavidsonReads, the community-wide reading program, plans its 2009 finale Saturday – a Davidson Family Reunion on the Village Green. They’ll have food, dancing, music and trivia contests for prizes. And local pie-bakers – both individuals and restaurants – are invited to enter their favorite recipes in a community pie-baking contest.

Judges will be Mayor John Woods; Mary Jane Leach, manager of the Davidson Farmers Market; and Ashley Lawson, baker at MJ’s Sugar Shack on Main Street.

Bring your pie to the tent on the Village Green by noon Saturday. One entry per individual or business.

Saturday’s event will include Davidson trivia, music by local singer/guitarist Rusty Knox, Israeli dancing and more. For more information, visit the DavidsonReads website, www.davidsonreads.org.

Our community calendar this week includes a Davidson Family Reunion on the Village Green Saturday, a finale to this year’s DavidsonReads community wide reading program. The event includes performances, readings, food and activities for children. On Sunday afternoon, you can learn about the history of the town during the 20th century in a presentation by The Davidson Historical Society. Theater lovers have a lot to choose from this weekend as “‘night Mother” continues at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius, Davidson College hosts performances of “To Kill a Mockingbird” (tonight only) and “Alice in Wonderland.”

On the music front: Davidson College pianist Cynthia Lawing and veteran pianist Harriette Line Thompson play a duo piano concert at 12:30 p.m. Friday as part of the college’s Musical Interludes series. Sunday afternoon, organized Henry Lebedinsky plays a benefit concert of organ music to aid his Music at St. Alban’s series. And Sunday evening the college’s a cappella singing group combine to sing a benefit concert for the elementary school PTA Too program.

Davidson College football team plays its final game of the season this weekend, against Marist, on Saturday. Or you may want to stay home and watch the Wildcat men’s basketball team in its season opener against Butler, in Indianpolis, on TV.

On Friday morning, several agencies will offer “Caregivers Caring for Themselves,” a panel discussion and workshop on the mistreatment of elders, for caregivers and seniors. That’s at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, Cornelius. And have you raked your leaves yet? If not, look for help from Davidson College students raising money for their Habitat for Humanity house as part of “Rake-a-Thon 2009,” this weekend and next.

SATURDAY, NOV. 14, noon to 2:30 p.m., Davidson Village Green – “Davidson Family Reunion,” a free community event that serves as the finale of the DavidsonReads 2009 program. By bringing Davidson’s different religious and community groups together, the event aims to illustrate the best lessons of this year’s book, James McBride’s “The Color of Water.” Local churches, synagogues and schools are planning to participate with choral and musical performances, an ethnic dancing showcase and dramatic readings. The Davidson Historical Society will display archived family trees and local citizens are encouraged to display their family trees. There will be a community potluck, pie baking contest and children’s holiday art projects by The Community Arts Project. SUNDAY, NOV. 15, 7 p.m., Davidson College Alvarez College Union 900 Room – Davidson College Eco House and the College Union Board sponsor a showing of “Food Inc.” The Eco House is a student residence whose members try to buy most food from local sources. Filmmaker Robert Kenner looks into the nation’s food industry, “exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment,” according to one summary of the film. MONDAY, NOV. 16, Davidson College – Davidson College will dedicate its new Vann Center for Ethics with a day of events on Monday, Nov. 16. The celebration will begin with a dedication ceremony at 4 p.m. outside the Vann Center for Ethics, in Eumenean Hall. At 7 p.m., Roger Goodell, commissioner of the National Football League and leading athletic reformer, will offer brief remarks and then take questions in a discussion in Duke Family Performance Hall. This event will be moderated by David Perry, director of the Vann Center for Ethics. Both events are open to the public. It’s a weekend for panel discussions, a theater opening and the Carolina Renaissance Festival. Thursday, the DavidsonReads community reading program presents a panel of local clergy discussing religion and education and this year’s townwide reading book, “The Color of Water,” by James McBride. Saturday, Davidson United Methodist Church hosts a community forum on restorative justice.

The Davidson College men’s soccer team plays Elon on Saturday with hopes of adding to their wins against other North Carolina schools, including Tuesday’s defeat of Duke

Davidson Community Players raise the curtain Thursday night on their latest production, “Almost, Maine,” a romantic comedy that follows nine tales of love on a cold, clear, moonless night in the fictional town of the title. Also, the Carolina Renaissance Festival opens its six-week run off Poplar Tent Road, east of Davidson.

Don’t overlook the opening of the McDowell Creek Greenway, which links Huntersville and Cornelius and provides access for pedestrians and bicyclists to Birkdale Village.

Many fund-raisers are scheduled: from a silent auction Thursday to benefit Davidson-Cornelius Day Care to the McKinney Academy golf tournament Saturday. Other fund-raisers this weekend will benefit church missions at Davidson United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity, Easter Seals and Autism Speaks.

We’ve had inquiries about what happened to the town’s annual BBQ, Blanket & Bluegrass event. It was held for 10 years, at Beaver Dam on Davidson-Concord Road, sponsored by Davidson Parks & Recreation. Town officials tell us the festival was not held this year as they focused on more downtown events. One of those will
