Archibald Angus Charles Kennedy, Chief of Clan Kennedy, and Christopher Kennedy, North American Chief of the Kennedy Society, will be honored guests at this weekend's Rural Hill Scottish Festival.

Get ready for another busy week throughout the area, with a long list of local and regional events – from the 19th annual Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games to Davidson’s Art on the Green and the season opening Concert on the Green. Also on the schedule: Davidson Community Players’ Connie Company presents “A Bear Named Paddington” while Davidson College students perform a series of one-act plays. Monday brings a Cornelius Town Board meeting and there’s a public hearing in Huntersville Wednesday on the widening of I-77. The region’s Jewish community gathers at Davidson College Thursday for Yom HaShoah, a Holocaust Remembrance ceremony. Several organizations host fund-raising golf tournaments this week, and The Lake Norman Chamber hosts its annual Champions of Diversity Breakfast Wednesday. Looks like a beautiful fall weekend ahead, indoors and out. There’s plenty to see and do, from the debut of the new Harry Potter movie at midnight Thursday at Our Town Cinemas to Davidson College’s theatrical production “Galileo” to a fund-raising Turkey Trot 5K Saturday on the Village Green. There’s music nightly at Summit Coffee, beginning with a songwriter showcase Thursday night. And a cappellafans won’t want to miss Saturday night’s concert at the college, which will raise funds for programs serving children with special needs. On Sunday, the annual Community Thanksgiving Service will honor town officials and promote interfaith understanding. And Davidson Historical Society screens the local documentary “Our Vanishing Americana.”

Our Vanishing Americana poster

Davidson Historical Society will host a screening of the locally-produced documentary “Our Vanishing Americana” on Sunday, Nov. 21, 4 p.m. in the Davidson IB School Auditorium. Producer Mike Lassiter and writer and director Scott Galloway will introduce and answer questions about the film.

The film is based on Lassiter’s 2006 photo book of the same name and focuses on the state’s old hardware stores, groceries, gas stations, pharmacies, barber shops, eateries and other disappearing places. Read the full story

Davidson Historical Society will host a wine and cheese open house this afternoon, Friday, June 25, at the historic Houston House in downtown Davidson. The event is a chance to see a historic home as well as to celebrate 40 years in business for The Needlecraft Center, which occupies the ground floor.
