This week in Davidson, students meet at the Village Green to “go green” and walk to school Wednesday in observance of International Walk to School Day. Also this week, the Davidson Community Players opens its two-week run of “Love Letters,” a character study based on the lifetime exchange of letters of two people who grow from friends into lovers, Thursday night at the Armour Street Theatre. And for those interested in the upcoming vote, Stand Up N.C. will hold a forum with speakers N.C. Rep. Mike Hager and Dan Forest, a candidate for lieutenant governor, and the Old Fashioned Cornelius Barbecue and Candidates forum, with local candidates from Cornelius and Huntersville, at the Cornelius Town Hall on Thursday. Also Thursday, Hough High’s football team plays at West Charlotte High, while Davidson College’s football team hosts Marist in a Pioneer League game Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

Davidson Community Players has one production on the Armour Street Theatre stage this weekend, and another one in rehearsals for October – both directed by local theater veteran Wrenn Goodrum. The Connie Company youth theater group offers five performances of “Macbeth, Unplugged” Friday to Sunday. Meanwhile, the Players plan a production of A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters” Oct. 6-23. In the decade since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, America has recovered uneasily by tightening security, hunting down those responsible and debating the threat of radical Islam. We’ve fought costly
wars, debated good versus evil, and struggled with the global issues raised in the attacks. On the 10th anniversary of the national tragedy that defined a generation, Davidson Community Players’ production of “The Guys” is a painful reminder that the attacks also took a personal and local toll, in the nearly 3,000 lives lost. Davidson Community Players next week presents Anne Nelson’s “The Guys,” a poignant piece about devastation in the aftermath of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The play, starring regional actors Marla Brown and Lou Dalessandro, opens Sept. 8 and runs through Sept. 17, in remembrance of the events ten years ago. Read the full story

This week is packed with arts & entertainment opportunities. Auditions for the Davidson Community Players’ production of “Love Letters” are scheduled Monday and Tuesday. The Daylily Book
Club will be discussing “Loving Frank” by Nancy Horan on Tuesday at the Cornelius public library. On Thursday, there’s an opening reception for artists Kendall Buster and Chris Watts at Davidson College Visual Arts Center. North Mecklenburg Community Chorus hosts an open house Monday night. The movie “Tangled” will be playing at North Mecklenburg Park on Friday in Huntersville. Local favorites Davidson Express play this week’s Bluegrass & BBQ fest at CorneliusPresbyterian Church. The Warrior Dash comes to Rural Hill on Saturday, while Sunday brings a piano and organ concert on Sunday at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.
