An exhibit titled “Excavations,” including 19 paintings spanning the 50-year career of Davidson College art professor Herb Jackson, opens with a reception Thursday night at Davidson’s Belk Visual Arts Center. Elsewhere, Community School of Davidson produces its first high-school play, “Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon,” on Friday and Saturday, while the art-forgery drama “Masterpiece” continues at Davidson Community Players’ Armour Street Theater. Davidson College’s Gamut dance group hosts another show Friday and Saturday nights. There’s a Davidson Greenways, Trails and Bikeways meeting on Thursday and a Concert on the Green planning meeting on Friday.

Davidson Community Players’ production of “Masterpiece” takes the stage this weekend. At Davidson College, the Wildcat baseball team will be playing three games against Furman. North Carolina’s Poet Laureate Cathy Smith Bowers speaking at the Charlotte Writer’s Club’s March meeting on Thursday. There’s a business expo that will showcase Lake Norman businesses, nonprofits and attractions all day Friday, and Davidson library has preschool and toddler story times on Friday as well.

On Saturday, there’s a Special Olympics interest meeting at Bailey Middle School for parents, athletes, coaches and volunteers interested in being involved. Sunday, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church hosts a solo piano concert featuring Katie Reimer.

“Masterpiece,” a new play about a famous art forgery, debuts this weekend at Davidson Community Players, running Thursday-Sunday. Thursday night, there’s a Davidson College men’s basketball game against Elon. Friday night’s music includes Davidson Local at Summit Coffee,  and the Lake Norman Big Band Friday night at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Davidson’s baseball team faces Ohio Friday. On Saturday, the Davidson Farmer’s Market is open, there are two baseball games and a basketball game and a concert to benefit McKinney Academy. Davidson College Presbyterian Church hosts a chili cook-off, while soup is at the heart of a fund-raiser in Mooresville for Serenity House.

Beyond the madness that is a Friday night at any American College, Davidson College’s campus welcomed a joint performance of Rupert T. Barber Jr.’s adaptation of “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” by the Davidson College Theater Department and Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co.

The play, which opened for a three-day run Friday night, featured some of the theater department’s rising talent, including freshmen Willa Folmar (His Empress), Nick McGuire (The Emperor), and Tatum Pottenger (Lord Chamberlain) as well as veterans senior Julie Brylawski (Buckalow) and Sophomore Amelia Lumpkin (Roscoe). Summit Coffee welcomes songwriters from around the area this weekend, beginning with a “Songwriters Showcase” on Thursday and a show by Asheville’s Kellin Watson Friday. Meanwhile, Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. and Davidson College offer the children’s show The Emperor’s New Clothes Friday through Sunday. The Players also will have open auditions Sunday and Monday for Ragtime. On Sunday there’s an anti-bullying concert sponsored by a new organization called The Foundation for Respect Ability.  Saturday night also brings the Ada Jenkins Center’s annual ICE gala.
