Davidson Community Players are re-staging their fall production of “Almost, Maine” at Charlotte’s Spirit Square, with final performances this weekend. Meanwhile, Bailey Middle School seventh and eight graders will perform the hit musical “Grease” on Friday and Saturday, and tickets are a bargain-priced $2. And coming up next week, Davidson College theater department and Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. children’s theater produce “Annavel & the Funny Little Man: A Rumpelstiltskin Tale” on the college campus.

It’s a busy week ahead in and around Davidson with public meetings, theater, an art exhibit opening and school open houses. Davidson College’s women’s basketball team looks to keep its winning streak alive tonight against Chattanooga at Belk Arena. The Town Board meets Tuesday night, then spends Wednesday to Friday at a 3-day retreat in Charlotte. Also Tuesday night, philanthropist Doris Buffett (sister of investor Warren Buffett) lectures at Davidson College.

On Thursday night, Lake Norman Transportation Commission, which includes public officials from Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville, holds its monthly meeting at Davidson Town Hall. And if you missed it last fall, Davidson Community Players are re-staging their production of “Almost, Maine” at Spirit Square in Charlotte Thursday to Sunday. Doris Buffett, a Nebraska-based philanthropist with Davidson College connections who is known as “the Sunshine Lady,” will speak Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Smith 900 Room of the Alvarez College Union. The talk—a conversation with Davidson College President Tom Ross—is open to the public at no charge. Read the full story

The new year has arrived, with a few tasty tidbits for your entertainment pleasure in and around Davidson this week. The Rocky River Road Club holds its annual Polar Bear winter bike ride Saturday morning, raising money for Ada Jenkins Center. Davidson College men’s basketball team is in town for two more games, tonight in a Cats-vs.-Dogs matchup with Samford, and Saturday afternoon against Appalachian State.

There’s also a variety of music at Summit Coffee and The Brickhouse this week, including the Rusty Knox Band at Summit Thursday and jazz guitarist Dennis Currier and Terzetto Saturday at Summit – the latter a rare chance to hear some home-grown jazz right here in Davidson. The college is slowly coming back to life, as students will arrive at the weekend for classes that resume Monday.
