Hope you have some free time this weekend. There’s a full schedule of fun in and around Davidson – from football to fund-raisers and music to a townwide bicycle ride. The Project for Innovation, Energy & Sustainability hosts a sustainability seminar for business owners Friday. Both the Hough High and Davidson College football teams are back at home, Hough playing Vance at its first-ever homecoming Friday night and Davidson facing Jacksonville on Saturday. Fund-raisers in the next few days include the River Run Pro-Am tennis tournament Saturday and Sunday and the Helping Paws Dog Show on the Village Green Sunday. Saturday morning also brings the Davidson Farmer’s Market, the Children’s Schoolhouse annual Carnival on the Green, and a town-organized 3-mile bicycle safety awareness ride along local greenways and streets. The town of Mooresville holds both a Music on Main outdoor concert Friday and a Movies on Main screening Saturday night of “Hannah Montana: The Movie.” Our Town Cinemas in Davidson holds over the local film “The Trial” for a third week, and continues its classics series. “North by Northwest” wraps up with screenings Thursday, while an old favorite returns beginning Friday: “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

From lectures and meetings to fund-raisers and football, our community calendar in and around Davidson this week offers a long list of options if you’re looking for something to do. The vocal group Rockapella performs in the Davidson College Artists Series Tuesday, while Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Díaz gives the college’s annual Reynolds Lecture Thursday. Small business owners are offered a Friday morning seminar on sustainability. Hold your breath: It’s a busy week ahead in and around Davidson. What to pick? The North Meck Rotary and Angels of ’97 have annual charity golf tournaments at either end of the work week. Tuesday is chock full of meetings and lectures: Davidson Rotary, the Davidson Town Board, and the North Meck Republican Women all are meeting. At the college are lectures on immigration reform and by visiting artist Ewan Gibbs. Also Tuesday, Organ at Davidson opens its 2010-11 series with a concert by Robert Parris. Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities holds a public meeting Wednesday on possible reform of the water rate structure. The weekend brings a variety of opportunities, including the Know Your Farms’ 2nd annual tour of area farms and the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green road races and Green Day Festival. On Sunday, the world-class Music @ St. Alban’s series kicks off with the fifth annual “BachFest,” while Mt. Zion United Methodist Church starts its 2010-11 concert series with a performance by the Vianello Trio. Also Sunday, it’s the final 2010 Concert on the Green, with the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble.

Our weekend in and around Davidson starts with literary events tonight (Thursday), including an appearance by soldier-poet Brian Turner at Davidson College. Friday brings a midday “Musical Interlude” with keyboardist Henry Lebedinsky playing a program of Russian music, and an evening Concert on the Green with the Extraordinaires. Davidson Farmer’s Market runs Saturday morning downtown, when you’ll also find a Community Garage Sale at the Lake Norman YMCA. Hough High’s football team hosts Garinger at home on Saturday night. Don’t forget the premiere of the local film “The Trial” at Our Town Cinemas Friday and Saturday. And Christa Faut Gallery hosts a reception for local artist Elizabeth Bradford, whose work is featured there this month.

Soldier-poet Brian Turner, author of the best-selling poetry collection “Here, Bullet,” will give a free public lecture Thursday at Davidson College. The same night, Charlotte Writers Club North will host poet and author Peter Blair at its first meeting of the 2010-11 season.
