Our calendar in Davidson this week is chock full of the fun and the serious, from the opening of Davidson College’s production of “Pride & Prejudice” and Friday’s Halloween march on Main Street to meetings of the Davidson Planning Board (Mon.) and Town Board (Tue.). Halloween night (Sun.) brings screenings of the silent film “Nosferatu” with organ accompaniment. And coming up at week’s end, it’s Family Weekend at Davidson College, including a Friday night concert and Saturday’s annual fall convocation. Hough High’s theater department produces “Dracula” this weekend, while local children have organized a Think Pink Dog Show and Halloween party on the Village Green Saturday. Meanwhile, sports teams have a busy schedule this week as well, from soccer and volleyball to football and field hockey.

Seasonal events, fund-raisers, and concerts stand out among the many events going on this weekend in and around Davidson. Davidson College lectures and seminars focus on mathematics, chemistry, and masculinity in Baroque Rome. Davidson’s women’s volleyball will play Georgia Southern on Thursday, while  women’s soccer faces Chattanooga at home on Sunday.

Martin Gardner - Oberwolfach Photo Collection

When author and Scientific American columnist Martin Gardner passed away in May, he left behind a long career bringing math to the masses and inspiring young people to pursue mathematics. This week, “Celebration of Mind” events around the world will honor his memory. Local mimes Tim and Tanya Chartier will join in with an event at Davidson College Thursday (details below).

This weekend offers a variety of things to do in and around Davidson. The Davidson Housing Coalition’s Festival for Hope & Housing will be at Davidson United Methodist Church and the Village Green on Saturday. Davidson Farmer’s Market is also on tap Saturday morning, next to Town Hall. And an all-day concert by local musicians is planned Saturday at Summit Coffee, to raise money for the Davidson Library Task Force’s $175,000 fund-raising campaign.

Our Davidson community calendar this week swings from from public meetings at Town Hall and lectures and film screenings to sporting events and concerts. We’ve got two events tied to the Davidson Library Task force’s fund-raising campaign: an all-day 15th anniversary celebration at public library branch Wednesday and an all-day concert by local musicians Saturday at Summit Coffee. The annual Davidson United Methodist Church book sale begins a two-weekend run on Friday. Saturday brings the Festival for Hope and Housing, a fund-raising bike ride and Taste of Home festival for the Davidson Housing Coalition.

Watch this interview with British artist Ewan Gibbs, whose exhibit “Ewan Gibbs: America” is on display at Davidson College through Oct. 6. Mr. Gibbs’ drawings use iconic images of American cities and culture. They’re painstakingly created using a grid of tiny marks on paper, almost like “a human computer printer,” he says.

Mr. Gibbs talks about the exhibit, the “eureka moment” that inspired his unusual technique, and the importance of the images vs. his technique.

The Exhibit “Ewan Gibbs: America” is on display through Oct. 6 in Davidson College’s Belk Visual Arts Center, Main and Griffith streets. Also on display is the annual fall show of faculty artworks. The galleries are open weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm and weekends from noon to 4 pm. More information is available on the college website.
