In October, math communities around the world celebrate the playfulness of Martin Gardner, who had an extraordinary impact infusing fun into mathematics.  It’s been said that Gardner turned thousands of children into mathematicians and thousands of mathematicians into children.  

Davidson College joins in again this year with its own Celebration of Mind, a free program for young and old. It’s on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6-8pm, in Hance Auditorium (under the dome in the Chambers Building).

The group exhibit “Parodic Machines” opens this week at Davidson College’s Belk Visual Arts Center, with a panel discussion and an opening reception. The show features five artists working in the field of robotics: Nick Bontrager, David Bowen, Matt Kenyon, Hye Yeon Nam, and Fernando Orellana.

A panel discussion is planned Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6pm at the Semans Lecture Hall in the Katherine & Tom Belk Visual Arts Center, 315 N. Main St., Davidson. The artists will speak about their work, which relies on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics during a curator-led panel discussion.

The opening reception is Thursday, Oct. 24, 6:30–8:30pm, in the arts center’s Van Every Gallery.

“Twelfth Night” is one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, a journey of mistaken identity and reclaimed love. From Oct. 25 to Nov. 2, Davidson College’s Theatre Department will stage the play at Duke Family Performance Hall Oct. 25-27 and Nov. 1-2.

“Twelfth Night” is directed by Steve Umberger, the founder and former manager of Charlotte Repertory Theatre, who now manages Festival Stage Theatre Co. in Winston Salem.

Organist Virginia Vance

Davidson College’s Concert Series on Sunday afternoon will feature a program of music by great American composers Peter Schickele and Lou Harrison. Meanwhile, Virginia Vance, a Baroque music specialist and church organist from Rocky Mount, will play the second concert in the 2013-14 Organ at Davidson series on Tuesday, Oct. 8. It’s typically taboo to pulling out your smartphone in a theater. But a new play written and produced by Davidson College student thespians will encourage the audience to do just that. “Spark Source” was created with funding from the Davidson Research Initiative and runs this weekend at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius, exploring the social implications of technology and social media.

Performances are Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7:30pm and at 2pm Sunday, Sept. 29. Tickets are $10 for regular admission and $5 for students, and they are available only online at
