Former NAACP president Benjamin Jealous will be the keynote speaker as part of a series of 2014 Martin Luther King Day activities, seminars and talks at Davidson College. An image from the “State of Emergency” exhibition at Davidson College, by artist Robert Polidori, is titled “5417 Marginy Street, New Orleans, LA.” The 2005 image depicts the interior of a home destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Art by Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei will highlight an exhibition at Davidson College that concerns the theme of disaster. Curated by Director and Curator of the Van Every/Smith Galleries Lia Newman, “State of Emergency” will include works by 18 artists.

The Davidson College Asian Cultural Awareness Association and the Chinese Culture Club will mark the Year of the Horse with a lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The event begins with a program from 5-7pm in the Alvarez Student Union Atrium, followed by fireworks at 7:30pm on the lawn of the Chambers Building.

The Davidson College Symphony and other ensembles will join community actors and dancers in the gala Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 3-4.

Davidson College’s music department will collaborate with community dance and theater groups next week on a new event just before Christmas in Davidson: a two-day Davidson Holiday Gala Celebration. The performance brings together the Davidson College Symphony and jazz band, campus choral groups, the African Drumming Ensemble, and community performers for a fast-paced concert of holiday favorites and sing-alongs, with doses of humor and holiday spirit.
Performances are Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 3-4, at 7:30pm at Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College.
