Local youth with Activate Community Through Theatre perform “Peter Pan and Wendy” at Woodlawn School the next two weekends.
This weekend offers a variety of choices for live music, from California’s Spanky Pismo at Birdsnest to live jazz at Carrburritos to Courting Elizabeth at the Wine Cellar. Kids’ play “Peter Pan and Wendy” is on stage at Woodlawn School, while the Bark in the Park dog fest is Saturday at Rural Hill. Thursday night, staff from JV Washam and Davidson elementary schools square off in their annual charity basketball game. And Davidson’s women’s lacrosse team hosts the Big South conference lacrosse championship Friday through Sunday. There are also public meetings, poetry readings, and road races. Thirteen North Mecklenburg area middle school students were selected for the 2013 CMS Middle School Honors Band Clinic held on April 12-13, 2013, at Waddell Language Academy. Meanwhile, Hough High School senior and jazz drummer Tre’ McKinney of Huntersville, won top honors in the All-State Jazz Band weekend. And mark your calendar: Davidson College Symphony performs free this Wednesday night at Duke Family Performance Hall. Read the full story

Free concert of Cartoon Music by the Davidson College Symphony Wednesday night.
Town board meetings, live music at Carrburritos and other venues, and a free concert of “Cartoon Music” by the Davidson College Symphony are among the many events in the Lake Norman area this week. Tuesady brings the annual Autism Aware Fare dining fundraiser at local restaurants. On Thursday, staff from JV Washam and Davidson elementary schools will square off in a charity basketball game. And the regular-season champion Davidson College women’s lacrosse team hosts the Big South conference lacrosse championship Friday through Sunday. This coming weekend also brings the annual Miles for Marnie road race, Davidson Farmer’s Market and the “Bark in the Park” dog festival at Rural Hill in Huntersville.

A small crowd gathered at Davidson College Thursday to dedicate “Waves III,” the newest addition to the college’s outdoor sculpture collection. The work by contemporary Spanish artist Jaume Plensa is a stainless-steel figure, seated on stone and fashioned from letters and characters representing languages across the globe.
The guests included President Carol Quillen and other college staff, students and art lovers, and alumnus Jim Pepper, of the Davidson Class of 1965, who donated the work. Read the full story

Community Arts Project hosts a “Taste of Art” fundraiser Thursday at Fresh Market in Cornelius. Downtown Davidson’s April Is for Arts Gallery Crawl is Friday night. Saturday is chock full of community festivals, including Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore Community Fest, the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Paddlefest on Lake Davidson,, Lake Norman YMCA’s Family Fun Day on Lake Cornelius, and the Pawz Too Run 5K on the Davidson Village Green. Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. youth theater offers “Treasure Island” and the Kannapolis Intimidators minor league baseball team opens its home season with a series against the Hickory Crawdads. There’s plenty of live music at area venues, including live jazz Thursday night at Carrburritos and The Belfast Boys Friday at The Birdsnest, both in Davidson.
