An eclectic mix of the musical and performing arts highlight our calendar of events and activities the area this weekend – from Celtic and jazz concerts at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church to local bands at various venues to several stage productions, including “Children of a Lesser God” at Davidson Community Players’ Armour Street Theatre.

On the musical side, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson will hold two unique performances this weekend — a Celtic music concert on Saturday night featuring singer Abigail Lennox and Celtic duo Earl’s Chair, and hymns and spirituals by the Mark Sterbank Jazz Group on Sunday afternoon.

It’s the first full week of March — that means March Madness has begun, with Davidson in the finals of the Southern Conference basketball tournament Monday in Asheville, and the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament beginning Thursday in Atlanta. For those who won’t be glued to the TV, there’s plenty to do this week in Davidson and the surrounding communities – from a regional biz expo Monday to Hough High’s production of “Annie” to a big bass tournament on Lake Norman. A variety of fundraisers, the Davidson Community Players’ “Children of a Lesser God” and a big gymnastics meet at Hough High School  highlight the weekend’s activities throughout the area. Davidson College’s calendar in March is a full one, from next week’s Alumni College to lectures to art exhibit openings. A variety of conferences are scheduled – one on reformed theology and ethics, another on music, the annual Women’s Leadership Conference, one on new media, and a Latin American Studies conference on the region’s colonial history. Music this month includes an Organ at Davidson concert and an appearance by the Kontras Quartet. (Oh, and next week is Spring Break, when most students will be off campus.)
