Davidson Town Day is back for another year, running Saturday, May 4,  from 10am to 7pm, on the Village Green downtown. The day includes an early morning 5K race, a day of fun, food trucks, games and music, and wraps up in the evening with a Concert on the Green – one of two this weekend in Davidson. The Ford Owners Association of the Carolinas is bringing its 9th annual Blue Oval Classic Car Show to Mooresville Ford on Saturday, May 4, 2013, from 8am to 4 pm.

Organizers expect more than 250 classic Ford cars and trucks, covering every decade from the 1920s to the present day. This year, Mercurys will be the featured vehicles at the show and the show again serves as a Fairlane Club of America mini-meet. Read the full story

Local youth with Activate Community Through Theatre perform “Peter Pan and Wendy” at Woodlawn School the next two weekends.

This weekend offers a variety of choices for live music, from California’s Spanky Pismo at Birdsnest to live jazz at Carrburritos to Courting Elizabeth at the Wine Cellar. Kids’ play “Peter Pan and Wendy” is on stage at Woodlawn School, while the Bark in the Park dog fest is Saturday at Rural Hill. Thursday night, staff from JV Washam and Davidson elementary schools square off in their annual charity basketball game. And Davidson’s women’s lacrosse team hosts the Big South conference lacrosse championship Friday through Sunday. There are also public meetings, poetry readings, and road races. Free concert of Cartoon Music by the Davidson College Symphony Wednesday night.

Town board meetings, live music at Carrburritos and other venues, and a free concert of “Cartoon Music” by the Davidson College Symphony are among the many events in the Lake Norman area this week. Tuesady brings the annual Autism Aware Fare dining fundraiser at local restaurants. On Thursday, staff from JV Washam and Davidson elementary schools will square off in a charity basketball game. And the regular-season champion Davidson College women’s lacrosse team hosts the Big South conference lacrosse championship Friday through Sunday. This coming weekend also brings the annual Miles for Marnie road race, Davidson Farmer’s Market and the “Bark in the Park” dog festival at Rural Hill in Huntersville.

Downtown Davidson will be busy this weekend, with Art on the Green Saturday and Sunday, followed Sunday night by the first Concert on the Green of 2013, featuring Davidson College symphony and jazz ensemble. Meanwhile, there are plenty of other festivals and other events, including a fine arts festival at Birkdale Village, and the Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games. Davidson Community Players Connie Co. youth theater continues its run of “Treasure Island.” And Friday night, you can support the Davidson Lands Conservancy at its “Toast the Earth” wine tasting and fundraiser at River Run Country Club.

Admittedly, I’m cheap. While I splurge on things that matter, like a nice dinner and a good bottle of wine, I enjoy bargain shopping, too. Having been raised by frugal parents born on the heels of the Great Depression, I learned valuable lessons about money and how to make the most of it.

My Mom would be proud. I hate wasting anything and it literally pains me to pay full price for something. As the offspring of a woman who negotiates a clearance item with the department manager at Lowe’s, and furnished her entire beach house with wicker furniture from Goodwill (Hey, people at the beach donate beach-y looking stuff) I guess it’s invevitable that some of it would rub off.
