Submit photos to Mooresville Artist Guild 2013 show


ArtNewsbugMooresville Artist Guild has put out a call for entries to its 2013 Photography Show, which will run July 9-26 at the Historic Depot Gallery in downtown Mooresville. This year’s judge will be by Byron Baldwin, a college and high school photography teacher for 35 years and a founding member of The Light Factory in Charlotte. Read the full story

Classes, lectures, and seminars are taking place across the region this week. Davidson Planning Board will hold an open meeting at 6pm Monday at Davidson Town Hall. On Tuesday, The Daylily Book Club will meet at the Cornelius Library at 10am with special guest and Davidson College professor emeritus, Dr. Tony Abbott. Summer library programs begin, ‘boat-in’ movie

The Davidson and Cornelius Libraries begin their summer educational initiatives this week starting with “A Walk in the Woods,” an educational performance and interactive program, at the Cornelius Library. Tomorrow, the Davidson Library hosts Dig Into Reading! for elementary school-aged children at 10:30am and Paws to Read, a reading skills initiative with therapy dogs, at 11am. Both of these events will occur every week this summer. Also on Tuesday, Char-Grill Davidson will be hosting the 3rd Annual “12 Hours of Burgers for 24 Hours of Booty.” 10% of all sales will be donated to Team Camden for 24 Hours of Booty in support of cancer research.

robin gibson bugAs I’m writing, I can hardly believe Father’s Day is here. But rather than lament the speed at which this year is flying by, I’d rather focus on the subject at hand. Like many of you, my relationship with my dad has evolved over the years – to one now of mutual respect and an understanding that he buys breakfast. Just kidding, but he does buy breakfast. And, not just for me, for all of us. And, not just for breakfast, for any meal when we dine out together. It’s an endearing gesture that reminds me he’s “Dad,” as much as I’m sure it reminds him of the same. No matter how old we get, we’re still his kids and he’s still our Dad. However, a one-sided financial arrangement rarely works, so, when possible, my siblings and I try to come up with ways to pick up the tab. Father’s Day is the perfect time to do it. Guided hikes, Habitat for Humanity benefit, live music

weekend calendar bugEnjoy the Davidson and Lake Norman region this weekend with a variety of live music opportunities, educational opportunities, and social gatherings.  If you’d like to head outdoors, two guided hikes are taking place, one for adults and the other for families with children. The Davidson Lands Conservancy offers a free guided tour of the backcountry Lake Norman State Park at 9am Saturday, led by naturalist Sharon Becker. For children, World of Wonder is hosting an exploratory creek walk for families with children 4 and up, focusing on what lives in our area’s creeks and streams.

Saturday evening, the Carrburritos Summer Concert Series kicks off with performer Chris Cook. Cook takes the stage at 9pm, and 10% of all proceeds from this show and others in the Summer Series will benefit the Ada Jenkins Music Program. Davidson Concerts on the Green continues Sunday, featuring party rock band Pushh at 6pm. Bring a chair and blanket and enjoy free music in your community.

On Thursday, the rescheduled Tarte Field dedication will take place at the Westmoreland Athletic Complex.
