Davidson Community Players open their production of “Violet” on Thursday night for a 15-show run. “Violet” is an award-winning musical about the civil rights era, based on a short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim” by Statesville author Doris Betts. And coming up, the local theater calendar also includes a March 25-28 Davidson College production of Ken Ludwig’s “Leading Ladies,” a comedy about a pair of struggling Shakespearean actors in rural Pennsylvania.

Our community calendar in and around Davidson this week brings art, music and theater, as well as public meetings. The Town Board monthly meeting is Tuesday, as is an organizational meeting for parents of future Hough High students. 
Our weekend calendar has a little something for everyone, from Davidson College’s men and women in the Southern Conference basketball tournaments in Charlotte to Rusty Knox Band at Summit Coffee Thursday night to a Davidson Farmers Market winter tailgate market Saturday downtown. On the cultural side side, Charlotte Writers’ Club North hosts writer Rand Brandes on Thursday night. And Tim Burton’s new film “Alice in Wonderland” opens Friday at Our Town Cinemas. Finally, for all you No. 30 fans: ex-Wildcat Stephen Curry makes his first appearance at a basketball game in Charlotte since joining the NBA on Saturday night, as his Warriors take on the Bobcats.
Davidson College hosts a variety of public events this month, including lectures by a pair of business celebrities: Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers and Federal Reserve Vice Chair Donald Kohn. Other events this month range from a performance of the new music ensemble Yarn/Wire to an appearance by the noted critic Diana Hume George. A new exhibit opens March 11 at the college art gallery, featuring concrete and paper sculptures and new etchings by visiting assistant art professor Lydia Musco.
