The Davidson College Asian Cultural Awareness Association and the Chinese Culture Club will mark the Year of the Horse with a lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The event begins with a program from 5-7pm in the Alvarez Student Union Atrium, followed by fireworks at 7:30pm on the lawn of the Chambers Building.

January came out swinging with the help of Old Man Winter. Luckily, he seems defeated as we’re already returning to more mild seasonal temps. That doesn’t mean a little rain won’t try to come in now and dampen our spirits.

Don’t let it. The Cornelius Arts Center has too much in store for us not to venture out. Starting with an exhibit opening Friday night, followed by an artist demonstration on Saturday, and ending with back-to-back film screenings on both Saturday and Sunday nights.

The first full week of the New Year is closing out with numerous arts and sporting events, meetings and music. Friday night, it’s the Cornelius 2nd Friday Art Crawl at the Oak Street Mill, including an opening reception for “Red Earth” at the Cornelius Arts Center. Saturday brings the annual Polar Bear 50K and 10K rides, organized by the Rocky River Road Club, a Davidson Farmer’s Market and a the first in a series of planned 2nd Saturday Art Crawls at the Eden Street Market in downtown Davidson. Read on for more highlights and events from our Events Calendar.

The Community Arts Project on North Main Street in Cornelius has opened its registration for winter classes and workshops. Classes for all ages include Mini Masters, Homeschool Art: Advanced Color Studies, Drawing for Teens, Intro to Monotype and Painting with Watercolors. The organization also is getting ready for its big annual fundraiser, the “Have a Heart” Valentine’s party, Feb. 8.   Read the full story

DavidsonLearns, the Lake Norman area’s lifelong learning program based in Davidson, will offer  Winter 2014 courses on Narratives and Conflicts, Poetry Writing, Anthropology and Genealogy, and Publishing.  Courses begin in mid-January or early February. Organ at Davidson presents Patrick A. Scott in recital on Tuesday at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, in a concert that will include an unusual improvisational challenge. Meanwhile, the 300th anniversary of the birth of composer Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach will be celebrated in the next Music at St. Alban’s and Music at St. Peter’s concerts in February.
