The Warehouse presents 'Frozen,' starting Friday.

This week offers a chance to attend a theater performance, a home and garden show and a number of informational lectures and seminars. On Monday, the Davidson public library is hosting Kid Lit, a discussion about author Allen Say for adults who enjoy reading children’s literature. Teachers from the Lake Norman area will be sharing their experiences at a small rural school in Guatemala during A Glimpse of Guatemala. On Wednesday, the owner of Instant Organic Garden will discuss how to have a garden without digging, tilling or weeding at Senior Scholars, there’s a lecture on the college process at Davidson Day School and Dr. Kristina Killgrove, from UNC Chapel Hill, will be speaking about how studying human remains can reveal details about the lives of immigrants in ancient Rome.

Byrony Lavery’s play Frozen starts on Friday at The Warehouse and continues each weekend until Feb. 13. This weekend is also the Charlotte Home and Landscape Show at the Cabarrus Arena where there’s a chance to gather insights from experts in the field. There are also two concerts on Sunday: bluegrass and folk music at Davidson College and spiritual music at St. Alban’s.

Summit Coffee welcomes songwriters from around the area this weekend, beginning with a “Songwriters Showcase” on Thursday and a show by Asheville’s Kellin Watson Friday. Meanwhile, Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. and Davidson College offer the children’s show The Emperor’s New Clothes Friday through Sunday. The Players also will have open auditions Sunday and Monday for Ragtime. On Sunday there’s an anti-bullying concert sponsored by a new organization called The Foundation for Respect Ability.  Saturday night also brings the Ada Jenkins Center’s annual ICE gala.

The snow wiped out most of what was planned for the beginning of the week. (Catch up with cancellations and weather related announcements in our coverage under the “cancellations” tag.) Area YMCAs have extended their free open houses originally scheduled Tuesday to last through Friday, Jan. 14.   Thursday is the first day of the “Financial Peace University” program at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, and there’s a lecture on lake-friendly landscaping by landscape designer Jan Enright in Mooresville. On Thursday night photographer Mitch Epstein and author Susan Bell will give a talk at Davidson College Visual Arts Center about their project that evaluates people’s relationships with energy. The Davidson library branch has toddler and preschool storytimes on Friday and Paws to Read on Saturday and there’s basketball Friday through Sunday.

There’s a good mixture of events this week that includes music, sports, lectures, and more. But many of Monday’s events have been postponed because of snow. Check our cancellations list on the front page for the latest info. Among this week’s cultural events is an artist lecture on Thursday by photographer Mitch Epstein and author Susan Bell, who will speak about their Internet and public art project whatisamericanpower.com. There’s a program at the Davidson College Presbyterian Church on Sunday that explores poetic images in faith.

Meetings this week include a Davidson town board meeting on Tuesday and a Lake Norman Transportation Commission meeting on Wednesday. The North Mecklenburg Republic Women’s meeting has been cancelled due to snow. The week closes with men’s and women’s basketball. The men play Furman on Wednesday and Wofford on Saturday. The women play Chattanooga on Friday and Samford on Sunday.

Davidson Community Players will host open auditions Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 5-6, for its February 2011 production of M.Z. Ribalow’s new play “Masterpiece.” The local theater group also plans auditions Jan. 23-24 for its upcoming production of “Ragtime.”
