Hand-bell group Charlotte Bronze plays this Saturday, May 17, in the Cornelius Concert Series at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius. Meanwhile, Sunday brings another Davidson Concert on the Green, from 6-8pm on the Village Green, with Side Car Social Club.  This week also brings the next installment of the Summit Songwriters Showcase Thursday night at Summit Coffee in Davidson. On Saturday, May 17, 2014, the STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics) Career Path Project (SCPP) will host a free career exploration event called the “STEM Experience” at the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson, NC. The event, from 11:30am to 4pm, will include food and hands-on activities where students can program robots, build wind turbines, launch rockets and experiment with electrical circuits.

The project also will award two $500 scholarships during the day. Read the full story

“Alice” by PK Donson

Brick Row Gallery, 21325 Catawba Avenue in downtown Cornelius, will host an opening reception this Friday, May 9, from 6-9pm for an exhibit of new works by artist PK Donson. Her “Artful Whimsy” series features real characters and images somewhat removed from traditional settings and immersed in a new reality, slightly fractured.

Donson will be in attendance to meet and greet guests. The reception is open to the public and wine and refreshments will be available. A second reception of  “Fractured Reality”  is scheduled for May 17 from 2 to 8pm during the ‘Tawba Walk Music and Arts Festival.  Read the full story

Our community calendar this week runs the gamut, from town hall meetings to Election Day, a butterfly lecture to National Bike to School Day, and Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore ReStyle designer challenge Thursday to Lake Norman’s first sanctioned standup paddle board competition Saturday. The weather tonight (Friday) will be perfect (if not a little chilly) for Movies in the Park, a partnership between the Town of Huntersville and Radiant Life Fellowship that brings outdoor movies to the public at North Mecklenburg Park. Gates open at 6:30pm where crowds will gather for the popular Disney animated film Frozen, which is set to begin promptly at 8:40pm. Food trucks will be on hand for those who come hungry. Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome. The movie is free and so is the popcorn. Read the full story

This weekend kicks off a new monthly South Main Art Market in the parking lot at South Main Square in Davidson. The market will run the first Saturday of each month, 10am to 3pm. Meanwhile, the next ‘Tawba Walk art crawl in downtown Cornelius is coming up on Saturday, May 17, at the Oak Street Mill and along Catawba Avenue. And during the ‘Tawba Walk, Cornelius Arts Center will have an opening reception for “Umbra,” an exhibit of installations by artist Meredith Donnelly.  Read on for the details.
