"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," the last film in the series, opens with a midnight show Thursday at Our Town Cinemas in Davidson and other theaters.
Our week begins with meetings – Lake Norman Marine Commission Monday, and both the Mecklenburg County Commission and Davidson Town Board Tuesday. On Wednesday, don’t be alarmed when you hear the McGuire Nuclear Station sirens being tested at 11:50 a.m. On Thursday, there’s a blood drive at Ben & Jerry’s, where donors receive a coupon for a free pint of ice cream. Bonita Knott, “the barefoot poet,” performs Friday and Saturday at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. On Saturday, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Mooresville hosts a Community Fest with yard sale, farmer’s market and community business expo. On Thursday, there’s a Murder Mystery at Lake Norman Cottage and Coolio will be performing at Unleashed Nightclub. On Friday, kids can bring a lunch and watch “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I” at the Davidson public library. On Saturday, World of Wonder and Davidson Lands Conservancy offer an outing to see the goats eating kudzu on Davidson College’s campus and the Cornelius Lions Club offers a free vision screening.

July 4 celebrations are happening around the area on Monday, finishing what was for many a long weekend. Huntersville is having a parade and festivities in Birkdale Village, Cornelius is having live music and screening “Chronicles of Narnia” and there’s a family festival in Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. Also on Monday is the release of an American Bald Eagle that was rehabilitated in the Raptor Center’s hospital. The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and Japan Collegiate All-Stars will play the fourth game of their 38th Collegiate All-Star Series on Wednesday. The Cornelius-Lake Norman Lions Club will be sponsoring free vision screening in the Cornelius Town Hall parking lot on Saturday.

Rough Draft plays a Concert on the Green Sunday.
While Independence Day isn’t until Monday, there are plenty of events this weekend to help you celebrate. Starting Saturday there is a July 4 festival at the U.S. National Whitewater Center with live music and fireworks each night, ending Monday. Sunday, Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville hosts a celebration with live music, games, vendors and fireworks. Also Sunday, there’s a small Independence Day parade in Davidson, followed by a Concert on the Green featuring Rough Draft. Other events this weekend include an all day library celebration at the Davidson public library on Friday to celebrate its survival for another fiscal year. And on Saturday, there’s the Soul Food Festival at Rural Hill that will feature old school R&B and great soul food. Meanwhile, CorneliusNews.net is the lead sponsor for the Town of Cornelius holiday celebration Monday.

The townwide ReadDavidson reading program has picked Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help” as this year’s community reading book, and organized six related events between August and November – from lectures and discussions to a bake-off and movie screening. Meanwhile, The Farm at Weathers Creek in Cleveland, N.C., is hosting a seminar for writers on using social media, with expert Jeff Elder. And Main Street Readers will discuss “We Are Welcome Here” at Main Street Books July 19.

This week starts off with a couple of book clubs: Guytime at Davidson public library on Monday and the Daylily book club at Cornelius public library on Tuesday. There’s a business seminar at the Lake Norman Chamber about how to grow your business on the internet on Monday. On Wednesday, “Little Fockers” will be screened at Torrence Chapel Park as part of the Summer Outdoor Cinema Series. The Soul Food Festival comes to Rural Hill on Saturday and the July 3rd Summer Celebration will be at the Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville on Sunday.
