Boaters can have vessels and safety equipment checked free on the lake Saturday. And Chinese bass baritone singer Sun Yu gives a lecture performance Sunday at Davidson College.

Tuesday’s primary election, public meetings about I-77 widening and the annual book sale at Davidson’s library branch are on the community calendar this week around the area. Mandolinist Michael Orlando plays Wednesday night at Flatiron Kitchen in Davidson, and there’s live music at least two nights this week at Summit Coffee. The Jetton Park Triathlon is scheduled Saturday morning at Jetton Park in Cornelius, and there’s a Run Wild 5K just down the street in Birkdale at the same time. The 41st Davidson Town Day and the Town Day 5K race, a day-long musical tribute to the late Professor Robert Whitton, and the annual Charlotte Asian Festival and Dragon Boat Races on Lake Norman are among this weekend’s highlights around the area. It’s beginner’s day at Davidson Elementary School Thursday, and the Lake Norman Rotary will host its annual Wine Cruise. In sports, Lake Norman also will see the Aloha Cub 2012 paddle board races. And Davidson College hosts the National Lacrosse Tournament Friday to Sunday.

Davidson celebrates its 41st Town Day and the 175th anniversary of the town on Saturday, May 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a festival of fun, community service, food from local restaurants, and entertainment on the Village Green. The day starts with an early morning 5K road race, this year to benefit Community School of Davidson. And there’s even a Town Day T-shirt for sale. Town officials are using the day to promote a variety of official programs, from pet licensing to bicycle safety. Read the full story

Here’s an idea for Friday afternoon, when the work week will be over and Saturday’s Town Day will still lie ahead: Davidson Historical Society will host a happy hour history walk downtown at 4 p.m., Friday, May 4.
