Extraordinaires, Friday night on the Green.
Our week begins with Labor Day off for many, though Davidson College classes remain in session. The Amazing Maize Maze is open at Rural Hill farm in Huntersville. The rest of the week bring a variety of sporting events, public meetings, and fund-raisers. ReadDavidson kicks off its 2010 townwide reading series with two events looking at this year’s book, “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson. On Tuesday, Davidson College professor Christine Marshall leads a discussion at the library. On Sunday, historical interpreter Charles Williams will discuss Andre Michaux’s botanical walk through the Carolinas in the 1780s. Also this week, a talk about snakes by Davidson professor Mike Dorcas at Mooresville Library Thursday, and a Saturday exhibit opening for local artist Elizabeth Bradford. Also this weekend, Our Town Cinemas premieres the local film “The Trial,” produced in Charlotte and based on a book by Charlotte lawyer and writer Robert Whitlow. And don’t forget Friday’s Concert on the Green, with the Extraordinaires.

Looking for something to do this weekend? You’ve got plenty of choices in and around Davidson, from home football openers at Davidson College and Hough High to college soccer and tennis tournaments to weekend’s Hurricane Hugo Juggling Fest and Vaudeville Extravaganza, also at the college. The Amazing Maize Maze – a cornfield maze – opens this weekend at Rural Hill. And the XTERRA trail running series comes to Fisher Farm Park on Sunday.

Our community calendar this week offers many possibilities, from a chance to help plan the layout of a new Lake Davidson Nature Preserve to football, soccer and tennis at Davidson College to weekend’s Hurricane Hugo Juggling Fest and Vaudeville Extravaganza. The Amazing Maize Maze – a cornfield maze – opens this weekend at Rural Hill. And the XTERRA trail running series comes to Fisher Farm Park on Sunday.

Klezmer band Freylach Time
The second Shalom Lake Norman Jewish Festival is scheduled Sunday, Aug. 29, from noon to 5 p.m., bringing games, music, food and fun to Ramsey Creek Park, off N.C. 73 in Cornelius.
More than 700 people attended the first festival last year, and organizers this year have expanded the event’s hours and offerings. The festival is sponsored by the Jewish Council of Lake Norman with support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte.

Davidson Lands Conservancy will host its annual road race, the Run for Green, on Saturday, Sept. 18, featuring 5K, 10K and half-marathon races. That’s followed by the 2nd annual Green Day festival with food, music and fun on the Village Green in downtown Davidson.
