Memorial Day is upon us and with it the promise of new beginnings. Chapters close, schools end, kids start summer vacations, and the lake gets really crowded. Not what you expected as I waxed poetic? Well, I, for one, will be spending it on the lake and I’m not alone.

As the area grows, so, too, do the number of boats. Not to mention non-owners who rent from local marinas, or belong to Freedom Boat Club, which recently opened at Waterstreet Seaport. Yet, the lake itself is not bigger. In fact, it’s the same size today as it was 11 years ago when I first moved here with fewer neighbors.

A crowded lake is a recipe for disaster. At the risk of sounding like a public service announcement, safety is critical. Obey the rules, abide by navigation markers, respect no wake zones and, don’t drink and drive. Officials have promised to crack down on the latter in a three year old campaign called “On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive.” This large-scale effort involves the collaboration and cooperation of seven state and federal law enforcement agencies and programs, along with local police, county sheriffs and other groups, such as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.”

Don’t take any chances. The risks are far too great. There are many ways to kick off your summer but if you choose to do it on the water, do your part to keep us safe.

In addition to the promise of new beginnings, this holiday packs plenty of sunshine, sunscreen, sunglasses, and shimmering water … finally.
