What’s your fancy this weekend? It’s a busy one, from sports to music to a Davidson Wildcats fan day. The International Tournament of Champions  wheelchair basketball tourney continues, with championship games Saturday at Lake Norman Charter School.   The newly formed North Carolina Baroque Orchestra performs Friday at Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House. The weekly Davidson Farmer’s Market is in downtown Davidson Saturday morning. At midday Saturday, Cornelius Presbyterian Church is hosting its Bluegrass & BBQ festival, while Davidson College’s Wildcat Fans Dayis on the Davidson Village Green.

The fourth season of Mooresville Concerts will open this Saturday night, Oct. 9, and organizers have turned to Davidson for the opening act. The six-member group Davidson Express, whose members are from throughout the area, plays a mix of bluegrass and original music, and recently produced their first recording, titled “Yuppie Hootennany.”

Saturday’s concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Charles Mack Citizens’ Center in downtown Mooresville. (Ticket information below.)

This week features a Senior Luau and fund-raiser Wednesday at the North Meck Senior Center on West Catawba in Cornelius. All proceeds will go towards the creation of new programs for area seniors. Davidson College freshmen (Class of 2014) will arrive on campus Wednesday for orientation activities that include the annual Service Walk around town Saturday. Cannon School plays its inaugural home football game this Friday vs. North Raleigh Christian. Saturday brings the weekly Davidson Farmers Market downtown next to Town Hall. “Bluegrass Saturdays,” a weekly series of bluegrass concerts on the lawn of Cornelius Presbyterian Church, kicks off this Saturday, Aug. 7, at 11:30 a.m. with a performance by Homeward Bound.

The series continues the following two Saturdays with appearances by A Deeper Shade of Blue, and Davidson Express. Concerts are free and run from 11:30 to 1 p.m.

Davidson College classes begin today (Monday) and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools students return on Tuesday. Our community calendar this week is filled with back-to-school and end-of-summer events, from an elementary school open house Monday to Thursday’s opening of the fall faculty art exhibit at Davidson College.

A representative from U.S. Rep. Mel Watt’s office will hold satellite office hours at Town Hall Monday. And the Davidson Town Board holds its monthly work session Tuesday, with a presentation on the ongoing Comprehensive Plan process.

Bishop John Shelby Spong will be the focus of a discussion series that starts Tuesday.

This week’s calendar of events in and around Davidson includes the start of a month-long discussion series on the ideas of the liberal Christian theologian John Shelby Spong.

The week also features the local Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop defending its title in an ice cream competition, National Night Out, the start of a bluegrass concert series in Cornelius, a community celebration sponsored by MI-Connection, the Saturday farmer’s market and more.  Details on those and other events below.
