It’s April and that means the annual month of art and cultural activities is in the offing in Davidson and north Mecklenburg. This year’s events include the Gallery Crawl Friday evening, April 16, the two-day Art on the Green festival (April 24-25), and the start of another season of Concerts on the Green on April 25.
And this year’s festival has a new element: Screenings of a series of art films at Davidson’s new movie theater, Our Town Cinemas, in Sadler Square.

Davidson’s Art on the Green art sale and community festival returns this April, and organizers are inviting artists to submit applications to show and sell their work. Deadline for applications is next Friday, Feb. 12.

Our Davidson-area calendar this week includes another April Is for Arts weekend, with the Art on the Green festival, the dedication of that new public art sculpture outside the post office, and a Sunday Concert on the Green. It also will be Reunion Weekend at the College. On Tuesday, the town hosts another in a series of community planning forums.
Davidson College grad and Army 1st Lt. Kevin Bell speaks tonight about his experiences in Afghanistan. Lectures at the college look at life after death, art collecting and pop culture. And golf tourneys and other fund-raisers are also on tap, including Tuesday’s dine-out Autism Aware Fare.
And looking ahead, just a reminder that 2009 Davidson Town Day is scheduled Saturday, May 2, on the Village Green. The day begins with the Day Care Dash fund-raising foot race at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies for Town Day are at 10. Details below.

Charlotte Writers Club North hosts poet Larry Sorkin and Charlotte Symphony cellist Tanya Bechtler at its meeting Thursday. And the Francophone Film Festival continues at Davidson College. Meanwhile, also this week in and around Davidson:
Parenting expert John Rosemond speaks tonight at Davidson IB Middle School in a program sponsored by the Church of the Good Shepherd. Children’s Arts Project and the Creative Art Exchange hold their “Taste for Art” fund-raiser Tuesday. At the weekend, the Music at St. Alban’s series continues, there’s a regional egg hunt in Huntersville, and Benches on the Green will feature bench-painting projects, music and juggling on the Village Green..
In sports, Davidson men’s and women’s tennis teams play at home Wednesday against Elon and UNC Greensboro, respectively, while the baseball team is on the road for games against North Carolina and Samford. And the Davidson women’s soccer team hosts UNC Greensboro on Sunday.

April is for Arts, a celebration of art and culture in North Mecklenburg, will feature numerous events this month in north Mecklenburg, including Davidson’s Art on the Green Festival, Benches on the Green day, gallery crawl and the season-opening Concert on the Green.
