Davidson College’s Belk Family Performance Hall will groove to the sounds of jazz when Jeremy Davis and the Fabulous Equinox Jazz Orchestra cuts loose with its high-energy stage show on Monday night. The performance by the Equinox Jazz Orchestra highlights a week’s worth of activities and events in Davidson and the surrounding communities.  On stage, the Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius wraps up its run of the comedy “On The Verge” this week with shows Thursday through Saturday, and an ensemble from the Connie Company — the Davidson Community Players’ youth company — puts on a free performance of “A Thousand Cranes” on Friday and Saturday. Miracle on 34th Street opens this week at Our Town Cinemas.

Our Town Cinemas in Davidson will be screening the holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street” this holiday season, beginning with a Lake Norman Chamber Kickoff and Fundraiser for the Ada Jenkins Center this Thursday, Dec. 8. A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a screening at 7 p.m. at the cinema, in the Sadler Square Shopping Center off Griffith Street.

Ada Jenkins Center representatives will be at the theater Thursday to greet guests and collect donation checks. The regional community services center, at 212 Gamble St. on Davidson’s West Side, provides a variety of services – from free health and dental clinics to after school and counseling programs. African-American Greek organizations at Davidson College will host their 5th annual Apocalypse Greek Step Show, “Revelation of the Divine,” on Saturday, Feb. 5. Step teams from Davidson and other universities – from John C. Smith to N.C. State to Hampton – will compete in the event, to be hosted BET “ComicView” comedian Benji Brown.

The show begins at 8 p.m. at Duke Family Performance Hall in the Davidson College Alvarez College Union. Read the full story

Fund-raisers next week to aid Habitat for Humanity, YMCA

Employees at Ingersoll Rand in Davidson competed in a triathlon last month, and ended up raising $60,000 for the Ada Jenkins Center on Gamble Street. Meanwhile, looking ahead at fund-raising events next week: Women of NASCAR are hosting a fund-raising dinner Tuesday, Sept. 7, as they team up to raise money to build a Habitat for Humanity house. And Lake Norman YMCA is seeking donations of items for its annual Community Garage Sale, which is Saturday, Sept. 11. Those events and more in our fund-raising calendar below.

Four visually impaired golfers will be on the links again this year when area Lions Clubs host the sixth annual Russell B. Knox Memorial Golf Tournament next Monday, April 26 at River Run Country Club to support Lions’ programs. Meanwhile, our fund-raisers’ calendar also includes this Saturday’s “Fire” 5k run and barbecue festival at Ada Jenkins Center, the Habitat for Humanity Car Show in Cornelius Saturday and the annual Dick Sanderson Driving 4Life Golf Tournament and dinner to support the Sanderson family and research on ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
