Meetings, art openings, and another full calendar of music lie ahead this weekend. We’ve got road races, live music, the ‘Tawba Walk Friday in downtown Cornelius and the weekend wraps up with a Concert on the Green in  Davidson featuring Davidson College’s symphony and jazz ensemble.

Thursday night in Huntersville, mayoral candidate Jim Puckett will meet and speak with two citizen groups in opposition to HOT lines at 6:30pm at Harvey’s. Artist Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum will open her site-specific exhibition, “ab initio,” in the Van Every Gallery at the Belk Visual Arts Center at 6:30pm, and archivist and historian Jan Blodgett of Davidson College will present “What Lies Under Lake Norman” at the Mooresville Public Library at 7pm. Read on for more highlights and events from This Week’s calendar.

Lectures and community meetings are taking place across the Lake Norman Region this week, and the Organ at Davidson series begins this Tuesday. Tonight, Davidson College faculty writers Christine Marshall and Cynthia Lewis will read from their work at the 16th annual “Davidson Reads” at 8pm in the 900 Room of the Alvarez College Union. The Lake Norman Marine Commission will meets at 7pm in Mooresville, and Summit Coffee will host its weekly trivia night starting at 7:30pm. Davidson College artist-in-residence Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum (born in Botswana, lives in South Africa) will give an artist lecture today (Thurday) at 6pm in Semans Lecture Hall in the Belk Visual Arts Center on her site-specific exhibition, “ab initio,” which opens on the 12th. The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, an edgy comedy currently open at the Warehouse PAC, continues this weekend with showtimes Thursday through Saturday. The arts scene north of Charlotte is booming these days. I envision a time –  soon – when residents of Cornelius and Davidson won’t have to venture into the city at all unless we just want to see tall buildings, or encounter traffic.

Among those impacting the arts scene locally, and in a big way, is The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. The intriguing, cool, black box venue on Westmoreland Road churns out production after production of quality live theater. Don’t believe me? Jacquelyn Culpepper and Dan Boye

Davidson College will kick off the fall performing arts season Saturday evening, Sept. 7, with a rare concert by the college’s most notable vocal duo. Longtime performing partners Jacquelyn Culpepper and Dan Boye will present a program of songs that chart the life cycle of love – from those first smitten moments through loss to eventual reconciliation. It’s their first appearance together in the college’s Duke Family Performance Hall.

The program will include songs from a half-dozen Broadway musicals written by composers including Gershwin, Cole Porter, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Irving Berlin. Continue Reading
