In case you didn’t get enough dogs and running, prepare for more of the same as we hop right into Easter. On the heels of last weekend’s successful Pawz Too Run event in Davidson, there are opportunities to run/walk again, to play with dogs, or do both — run/walk with dogs. On tap this weekend is the Lake Norman Rotary Run 5K and 10K, in its third year, and the always popular Bark for Life of Lake Norman, which plans to fundraise and entertain the masses (including people and pets) at Birkdale Village. That is, if predicted rainfall doesn’t get in the way.

CHARLOTTE–From Milan and Moscow, to Istanbul and Budapest, the globally-acclaimed exhibition “Van Gogh Alive” now comes to the United States east coast for the first time when it debuts at Discovery Place on April 25.

“Van Gogh Alive” is the synthesis of traditional art and modern technology. More than 3,000 images, including Vincent van Gogh’s most famous works are taken outside of the frame and brought to life in a whirlwind of vibrant colors and vivid details. For the first time, guests can walk through images of famous works, such as “The Starry Night,” “Sunflowers,” “The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum,” “The Yellow House,” “Bedroom in Arles” and many more.

Wednesday through Sunday brings a 50 Years of the Ford Mustang Celebration at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord. This will include track events, racing and an attempt to break the Guinness world record for most Mustangs in a caravan, by cruising from the speedway to downtown Kannapolis.

On Thursday, there’s a community discussion of “Fahrenheit 451″  at North County Regional Library, as part of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s One Book, One Week, One Community celebration. There’s a lecture at Davidson College where visiting writers Tony D’Souza and Steve Weinberg will be speaking. Also, Summit Coffee will have its monthly Songwriters Showcase featuring Rob Lytle, Ang Medlin, Nicole Monroe and host Rob McHale. Continue Reading

Davidson-based classical public radio station WDAV-FM will host a Young Chamber Musicians Competition this spring, giving young chamber music ensembles from around the country a chance to compete for cash during a concert in September in Davidson.

Musicians are invited to submit videos of a performance. They’ll be judged and two finalists in each age group will be selected to face off in a judged performance in September at Davidson College’s Tyler-Tallman Hall. Winners will get a share of $4,500 in prizes. Continue Reading

Public school students are on vacation this week, and there plenty of activities across the region. Featured this week are discussions on the book and film “Fahrenheit 451,” a couple of public meetings and a list of Easter egg hunts and other events. The Mustang Club of America plans a series of Events in and around Concord Motor Speedway from Wednesday to Sunday to celebrate the 50th birthday of the muscle car.

Discovery Place is in the final week of its multi-sensory exhibit “101 Inventions That Changed the World,” open daily during school vacation week.

On Monday night, “Do You Hear the People Sing?” at Davidson College features a first-ever collaboration of Davidson College Choral Arts Society, Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Workshop on an evening of spectacular music featuring songs from “Les Misérables,” “The Magic Flute,” Gilbert & Sullivan, and more.
