The annual Bach Birthday Bash – hailing Johann Sebastian Bach’s 328th birthday – is scheduled Tuesday, March 19, in the Organ at Davidson series at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. The Bach bash is  bigger than ever, thanks to this year’s  “Organ Plus” twist on the seven-year-old Organ at Davidson theme. “An Agreeable Harmony: Intimate Chamber Works by Bach and Handel” features organists, baroque violinist, cello and soprano.

Featured organist is Vivian Montgomery, adjunct professor or Harpsichord, Historical Performance and Musicology at University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. She will be performing with Jennifer Roig-Francoli on baroque violin, Barbara Krumdieck playing baroque cello and soprano Penelope Jensen. Continue Reading

Senior art majors are showing their work in one-week exhibits at the Belk Visual Art Center through May. Meanwhile, the indie rock band Passion Pit plays a concert at Belk Arena on March 24. Hello, March! I’m happy to see you. Winter is making a last ditch effort to cling on with a death grip and I, for one, would like to peel back its fingers and say goodbye. Granted, my definition of winter is relative in terms of thin Southern blood, however, a chill is a chill, and I’m over it. The first weekend of March has me thinking about spring, warm weather, sandals and pedicures. I’m also excited about the burgeoning arts scene blossoming around us. We are fortunate to live in an area that offers pleasant temps, plenty of sunshine, blue skies, water, and culture.

So, while we’re basking in the awesomeness of the season to come, let’s take advantage of it. Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, don’t miss these amazing art related events going on this weekend right here in Cornelius and Davidson: Continue Reading

The curtain goes up on two theatrical productions on area stages this weekend: Davidson Community Players’ production of the drama “Wit” and Hough High School’s “Honk,” a musical tale of the ugly duckling. Meanwhile, a new Davidson environmental group holds an organizing meeting Thursday night, and an opening reception is planned Friday evening at Cornelius Arts Center for an exhibit of paintings by Monique Luck. A major regional mind-body-spirit expo called “Shift Charlotte” runs Friday night and all day Saturday in Cornelius. And the Davidson Wildcats men’s basketball team closes out its regular season Saturday afternoon against Georgia Southern at Belk Arena. There’s also wide variety of live music in the next few days at venues ranging from Summit Coffee and Davidson College in Davidson to The Wine Cellar and the Rusty Rudder in Cornelius.

Robert Caro speaks Tuesday at Davidson.

Author and biographer Robert Caro will give the annual Conarroe Lecture at Davidson College on Tuesday night. The week’s calendar also includes Davidson planning and Town Board meetings, a public information session on the I-77 widening project in Huntersville and the inaugural meeting of a new environmental group in Davidson. There’s also lots of live music and the opening of Davidson Community Players’ production of the drama “Wit.”
