March Madness continues … and by madness I mean weather. The brief warm reprieve a couple of weeks ago was nothing more than a punchline in Winter’s cruel practical joke. I feel sorry for the boaters who were tricked into taking boats out early, only to be faced with the costly realization that they may have to winterize again. Thank goodness we didn’t fall for it. Not nice, Winter, really.

Soon, however, all will be right with the world. Carolina Cones has reopened. Which means Summer is practically here, and I now have somewhere to bolt to on leaving my dentist’s office across the street. What goes better with a six month cleaning and check up than a big thick peanut butter milkshake, I like to say.

Lectures, exhibits, choral and chamber music concerts, and an April 7 Holocaust remembrance are among the public events during April at Davidson College. On Saturday, April 6, president Carol Quillen will host a reception followed by the annual student-run Dinner at Davidson fund-raiser for financial aid. Two nights of talks April 8-9 will focus on “Religious Ethics in Contemporary Society” and Wake Forest University professor Randall G. Rogan will give the annual Chidsey Leadership Lecture on April 9. At mid-month, athletic director Jim Murphy will give a public lecture on “Ethics in Sports.” And on April 17, the college will dedicate the latest addition to its outdoor sculpture college, “Waves III” by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa. Davidson has been receiving a lot of National attention lately on the sporting scene, but Thursday evening was a chance for local music lovers to celebrate a less well known secret in Davidson, its thriving music scene.

Summit Coffee hosted its 2012 Songwriters Awards show.  Twenty-four talented artists entered this year’s annual event, but this evening belonged to the joint winners of the award, Billy Jones and Mike Alicke. Continue Reading

It’s the first weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament and some may be glued to that tube. But if you’re out and about, there are a wide variety of options in the Lake Norman area, from a concert with indie rock band Passion Pit to a Davidson Beer Crawl to a 50K Bike Around the Bomb for nuclear disarmament. On stage, “Guys and Dolls” is at Davidson College, while Warehouse PAC in Cornelius has “Crimes of Omission” and Lake Norman High in Mooresville is staging “Broadway Revue.” It’s Arbor Day in Davidson Friday, and Cornelius Police are hosting an Operation Medicine Drop on Saturday. Area venues have live music all weekend, beginning Thursday with the Summit Songwriters of the Year Billy Jones and Mike Alicke at Summit Coffee in Davidson. And Conrelius PARC two Easter events: Meet the Easter Bunny Friday morning at Cornelius Arts Center, and the annual “Hop into Spring” festival Saturday at Bailey Road Park.

Our Town Cinemas has “Oz the Great and Powerful,” “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” “Quartet” and “Django Unchained.” Opening Friday: “The Croods” and “Olympus Has Fallen.” See the showtimes at right on this page.

Global Zero of Davidson College and Davidson Outdoors will join together this Saturday, March 23 for Bike Around the Bomb, a 50-kilometer bike ride that traces the blast area of a nuclear explosion. The ride begins at 10am at the Davidson Town Green.
