SUMMARY:Alien Aquatic Species Discussed
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: David Deaton\, supervisor of the North Carolina Fish Hatcheries\, the originally scheduled speaker for this event\, had to cancel his program because of a last-minute change in his schedule. Have you heard about the alien clam that clogs our lake’s water intake valves? Learn the facts about these clams and other “invasive aquatic species” when Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists welcomes Gene Vaughn to our next free nature program set for 7 p.m. Thursday\, Feb. 12\, at Mooresville Public Library. A retired Duke Energy scientist\, Vaughn will discuss how invasive exotics started in the Great Lakes region and entered other inland lakes\, including our own Lake Norman. He will discuss the effect these species have on our community. The free program\, held at the Mooresville Public Library\, begins at 7 p.m. LNWC is a chapter of the NC Wildlife Federation\, whose mission is to protect and enhance the wildlife habitat of the Lake Norman area for all to enjoy. For more information\, visit www.LNWC.org\, or call Sid Smith\, education chair\, at 704-895-5686.

SUMMARY:Soil to Soul: 'Farmacy' Food as Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Join Karen Preston\, nurse practitioner and functional medicine practitioner for Davidson Family Medicine\, in this four-part seminar series that will introduce the emerging and engaging research on how our environment\, food and stress impact optimal health and wellness. On Thursday\, Feb. 12\, at 7 p.m.\, start work on learning how to create your own wellness blueprint with ‘Farmacy’. Session 1: Farmacy – Food As Medicine Did you know that every bite you eat changes your genetic expression to support health or disease? In this first session\, we will explore the impact of where and how our food is grown\, and how it influences our overall wellness. Based on the work of Dr. Daphne Miller\, author of Farmacology\, and other researchers\, participants will gain an appreciation for not only how the microbes and micronutrients in our soil impact our food\, but how community farms and gardens can positively impact the entire community. After establishing a framework of food as the ultimate medicine\, these concepts will be taken to the next level in Session 2. The other three classes will be on: Session 2: Blooming Health: What You Should Know About Gut Flora – March 12 Session 3: Detoxing in a Toxic Environment – April 9 Session 4: Life Support: How Happiness\, Stress Reduction\, and Community Create Health – May 7 FREE\, but registration is highly recommended. Space is limited to about 50 people. These sessions are once a month and will be held at the Davidson Town Hall Board Room. Register for individual sessions or for all four (Soil to Soul: Your Blueprint for Ultra Wellness) at www.townofdavidson.org/dpr.
