SUMMARY:Lecture: The Battle of Cowan's Ford
DESCRIPTION:Robert Ryals\, historian and president of the New Acquisition Militia living history group\, will give a presentation on the Revolutionary War Battle of Cowan’s Ford Tuesday\, Feb. 10\, at 7pm at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. The February presentation of the North Branch Mecklenburg Historical Association is titled “The Two-Sided Sacrifice of the Battle of Cowans Ford.” Traveling on N.C. 73 across the Catawba River\, one’s eye is drawn to the Cowan’s Ford dam at the McGuire Nuclear Station. Beneath this modern marvel lies a little known Revolutionary War battleground site where British and Patriot forces clashed in February 1781. Ryals will present a narrative of events leading up to the battle and provide insights about the sacrifices made by both sides in this conflict\, which took place six weeks before Cornwallis’ so-called victory at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. The presentation will be held in Room 209. For more information\, contact Sue Hardinger at 704-906-6656 or sarahsuenc@gmail.com. - Lake Norman Citizen

SUMMARY:Lecture: Discovering Fort San Juan
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, Feb. 10\, Dr. David Moore of Warren-Wilson College will present "Discovering Fort San Juan: Sixteenth-Century Spanish Armies and Native American Chiefs in the North Carolina Piedmont." Archaeologists working at the Berry site near Morganton have uncovered the remains of the Spanish Fort San Juan\, the earliest European settlement (A.D. 1567-1568) in the interior of the United States. Discover Magazine named Fort San Juan one of the top 100 stories of 2013. Come to the Belk Visual Arts Center at Davidson College to hear this story of scientific exploration and discovery and hear about this poorly understood and tragic era of interaction between Native American communities and Spanish invaders.
