Porter Halyburton
Cmdr. Porter Halyburton was born in Miami, FL, raised in Davidson, and graduated from Davidson College in 1963. After college, he joined the U.S. Navy, was trained as a fighter pilot, and was sent to Vietnam in May 1965 aboard the USS Independence.
Just five months later, Halyburton was shot down in his F-4B Phantom fighter/bomber 60 miles north of Hanoi. He was thought to have died in the crash, and a funeral was held back a home for the young American officer. But he actually was shot down on Oct. 17, 1965, about 60 miles north of Hanoi, and began a grueling seven and a half years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam’s infamous “Hanoi Hilton” prison.
On Monday, Nov. 17, he’ll share his experiences as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for 7½ years, in a lecture titled “Honor Under Pressure: Reflections of a Former POW in North Vietnam.”
The lecture begins at 7:30pm in Duke Family Performance Hall, in the Knobloch Campus Center.
