Davidson Senior Scholars Lecture: “Living Computers”
October 9, 2013 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Event Navigation
Davidson Professor and Chair of Mathematics at Davidson College Laurie Heyer will deliver a lecture titled “Living Computers” on Wednesday, October 9th at 1pm in the Davidson Town Hall boardroom. Every living cell must store a massive amount of information and do simple computations just to stay alive. Laurie will lead attendees on an exploration of how humans can harness such computational power to store information, monitor the environment, treat cancer patients, produce inexpensive drugs, and solve math problems inside living cells.
Dr. Heyer received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Colorado at Boulder and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Computational and Experimental Genomics at the University of Southern California. Laurie teaches a two-semester Calculus and Modeling sequence with a bio-math theme, and a cross-listed course in bioinformatics. Her current research, in collaboration with biologists and interdisciplinary teams of undergraduates, is in synthetic biology, a field in which researchers engineer microorganisms to do useful things.
