Catawba Ave. bridge closing
January 10 @ 12:00 am - January 12 @ 6:00 am
Event Navigation
The Catawba Avenue bridge over I-77 at Exit 28 is expected to be closed for construction from 12am Saturday, Jan. 10, to 12am Sunday, Jan. 11. Construction workers will be installing the decorative mast-and-cable structure on the bridge as part of the conversion of the interchange to a diverging diamond pattern.
Cars, bicycles and pedestrians will not be permitted to cross the highway at Catawba Avenue during the work. Detours are marked. Town officials have said the work could be done in 24 hours but may last longer.
Traffic exiting I-77 at Exit 28 in both directions will be able to turn right, but no autos will be allowed to cross the bridge.
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) also has announced re-routing for the No. 97 Village Rider bus:
On Saturday, January 10, 2015 and Sunday, January 11, 2015, route #97 Village Rider –Cornelius will detour because of construction on the Catawba Avenue Bridge. Trips traveling from Huntersville to Davidson will use the regular route to Catawba Avenue and Westmoreland Road, turn right on Westmoreland Road, left on Statesville Road, right on Catawba Avenue and resume the regular route.
Trips traveling from Davidson to Huntersville will use the regular route to Catawba Avenue and Interstate 77, turn right on Interstate 77 North, right onto exit 30 (Davidson), left on Griffith Street, left on Interstate 77 South, right onto exit 28 (Cornelius), right on Catawba Avenue and resume the regular route.
More information about the project may be found on the Town of Cornelius website, or on CorneliusNews.net under the DDI (Diverging Diamond Interchange) tag.
