Carolina Half Ironman Triathlon

The Town of Cornelius is cosponsoring the Carolina Half, a half-ironman triathlon at area parks. The point-to-point course starts with a 1.2-mile swim at the Davidson College Lake Campus off Langtree Road, then follows a 56-mile bike course to Bailey Road Park in Cornelius, and finishes with a 13.1-mile run beginning and ending at Bailey Road Park, and including sections of the greenway in Davidson and the Davidson College cross country trail.
The Town of Cornelius is sponsoring the race along with Set Up Events. As of Friday, Sept. 27, 463 athletes had registered. The race is Event No. 19 of the AAA Car Care North Carolina Triathlon Series.
Proceeds benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training.
Start/finish locations: Start is at the Davidson College Lake Campus, 200 Lake Campus Drive, Mooresville. Finish is at Bailey Road Park, 11536 Bailey Road, Cornelius.
Parking: No parking is allowed at Bailey Road Park. Participants must park in designated parking areas – Bailey Middle School and W.A. Hough High School, both east of the park on Bailey Road. All athletes and spectators will be transported via shuttle buses from Bailey Road Park to the Lake Campus.
Packet pickup: Saturday 2-7pm, Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main St., Davidson. Sunday, Sept. 29, 4:30-6:30am, Davidson College Lake Campus.
Davidson College Lake Campus and sport complex closings: Baker Sports Comlex Parking Lot Bay #3 will be closed from 5pm Friday, Sept. 27, through 3pm Sunday, Sept. 29. The cross country trails will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 10am to 2pm, as the running course follows a section on the trails. Participants may drop off bikes at the Lake Campus on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2-7pm. The swim starts at 7:30am on Sunday, Sept. 29 and should be clear by 10 a.m.
Cornelius traffic alerts: Watch for traffic along Bailey Road on Sunday morning from 7am to noon. Bailey Road Park will be closed for the race Sunday from 4am to 4pm. Police are urging drivers to be aware of cyclists and runners. Officers and volunteers will be stationed along Bailey Road to occasionally stop traffic.
