With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, are you feeling in a charitable mood? There are plenty of events going on this weekend in Davidson and surrounding communities to fill that need – and your entertainment needs as well.

Friday brings the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber’s annual RibFest fundraiser for the Holy Smokes Mission and Ministry and other community programs. And on Friday and Saturday, the Oak Street Mill will hold the Lake Norman Artisan Marketplace, with proceeds going toward the Kilgoris Project’s support of a Kenyan village through education, feeding programs, economic development and clean water. And Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson will hold two musical fundraisers as part of its “Movember” men’s health program. Read the full story

It’s the first week of November, and as the mercury begins its autumn slide toward winter weather, events in and around Davidson head indoors. Ballet Hispanico, the nation’s preeminent Hispanic-American dance group, performs Wednesday, while the Grammy-nominated Plain White T’s are on stage Friday, both at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. Hough High School’s theater department will perform “Our Town”, the Thornton Wilder classic, on Thursday through Saturday nights; and the Connie Company — the Davidson Community Players’ youth program — will open its eight-show run of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” with two shows daily on Saturday and Sunday. The Foundation for Respectability, a Cornelius-based anti-bullying group, this month sponsors an afternoon with Peter, Paul and Mary’s Peter Yarrow and award-winning multi-genre musician Billy Jonas. The singers will perform a special concert, “Don’t Laugh at Me,” at the Knight TheatreOct. 30 at 3 p.m. to promote bully-free school and community environments.
