From an exhibit opening with Davidson College visiting artist Lydia Musco Thursday to the opening of Davidson Community Players’ “Violet,” to live jazz at Summit Coffee Saturday, the arts scene is hopping. Davidson College hosts its annual Women’s Leadership Conference Saturday, and Davidson Housing Coalition hosts a meeting Saturday for prospective home buyers. "Harriet's Return"

The Ethnic Studies Program at Davidson College will present the one-woman play “Harriet’s Return” on Friday, March 12 at 7:30 pm, in the college’s Duke Family Performance Hall.

The play, written, directed and performed by Karen Jones Meadows, examines the life of the legendary Harriet Tubman, one of the leaders of the Underground Railroad.

This event is free and open to the public.

Davidson Community Players open their  production of “Violet” on Thursday night for a 15-show run. “Violet” is an award-winning musical about the civil rights era, based on a short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim” by Statesville author Doris Betts. And coming up, the local theater calendar also includes a March 25-28 Davidson College production of Ken Ludwig’s “Leading Ladies,” a comedy about a pair of struggling Shakespearean actors in rural Pennsylvania.

Our community calendar in and around Davidson this week brings art, music and theater, as well as public meetings. The Town Board monthly meeting is Tuesday, as is an organizational meeting for parents of future Hough High students.

On the arts scene, the innovative musical combo Yarn/Wire performs at Davidson Tuesday as part of the college artist series. Critic Diana Hume George lectures and presents writing awards at the college on Wednesday. And Davidson Community Players’ production of “Violet” opens on Thursday and has performances through Sunday.

Also, a new exhibit of work by visiting artist Lydia Musco opens with a reception Thursday at the Davidson College Visual Arts Center.

On Friday and Saturday, the college hosts a Women’s Leadership Conference at the Alvarez College Union. And keep your Saturday night open for some live jazz at Summit Coffee with Davidson guitarist Dennis Currier and his group Terzetto. Read the full story

Davidson Community Players will host an audition workshop for actors age 14 and up on Saturday, Feb. 27, 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. This free workshop, supported by an N.C. Arts Council grant, is designed to help actors prepare for summer auditions in the area.
